David Gergen on Bush: "By invoking Vietnam, he raised the automatic question, 'Well, if you've learned so much from history, Mr. President, how did you ever get us involved in another quagmire?' ... It's surprising to me that he would go back to that, and I think he's going to get a lot of cri
ticism." 8/24

1. Authomatic question #2: what does an AWOL deadbeat know about the military?

2. david, bush is a criminal, who hates liberal democratic america!
gergen's a cia pampered rich kid's rich kid's rich kid...bush needed a war (any war) to keep the media too busy to look at his basic illegality (which letterman/leno made jokes about)...gergen's been part of the snake oil salesman-media which both created junyer bush and has abetted everything he's done...gergen, in a way, is more culpable then junyer, who might well be mentally challenged

3. Automatic question #3: If you know think leaving Vietnam was a bad idea, where were you?
But we know the MSM will not ask any of these obvious questions and will help him catapult the propaganda to continue his occupation and even escalate it to Iran.

7. Precisely. He utters syllables. He certainly had no thought of any kind behind his words,
let alone any awareness of either history or even his own personal past.

4. I caught that comment on TV. Stating the obvious, perhaps, but it was good to hear.
Gergen's become one of the better talking heads on cable buzz.

10. May I humbly disagree
Echoing Bush messaging, Gergen called Iraq part of the "war on terrorism"

Just one of the many ongoing Gergen talking points.

From Media Matters:

While commenting for CNN on President Bush's inauguration speech, former presidential adviser David R. Gergen mouthed the administration line on Iraq and terrorism, referring to the Iraq invasion and the toppling of dictator Saddam Hussein as part of the "war on terrorism."

The guy is a very reliable establishment mouthpiece. All his newly disovered Bush criticism proves is that the Decider is finally being tossed under the bus by some key elements of the Repug power structure.

Welcome to the party Gergen.

5. There was a time, before the invasion, when a bunch of us screamed it would be another Vietnam
and the GOP sound machine attacked our logic.

Now, they are adopting our argument for their own purpose.

They are out of ideas but they won't admit the horror of their mistake and cut our loses. So long as China keeps extending credit, the drunken bastards will keep using the war to funnel off money our great grandkids will be paying off.

6. Roughly, what is a military casualty today equal to back in Vietnam times
Awkward wording, I know, but does anyone know what I'm getting at? I know technology/medical care today is a lot better than it was in the days of Vietnam.

9. I Must Say That I'm Still Surprisingly Pleased At How The Media's Been Taking Him To Task Over This.
When I was sitting in the waiting room of my wife's appt the other day (MUGA scan) I was watching his speech. I was thinking then how much bullshit it was and how desperate he seemed in it to rally some unknown audience. I remember wishing that it would be decimated like it deserved to be, but was aware that it would probably be spun to his benefit.

I'm still so pleasantly surprised to see that my hopes have been realized in this small sense, and that the media is in fact slaughtering him over this.
