I received an email from a Democratic group inviting me to "Stand Up With Us Against the War in Commack!"

Who knew there was a war going on in Commack? Why didn't anyone tell me?

A college classmate of mine grew up there and he said half the residents pronounced it "com-mack" and the other half said "co-mack."

Long Island's a strange place. You have an arboretum with a name that suggests it's a pick-your-own flower farm.

4. You're right on both counts!

I remember being at my friend's parents' house in Commack back in the sixties. It was a family reunion type affair, and a screaming match broke out between the relatives about how it was properly pronounced.

And you're right as well about the "cutting arboretum" - I'd been there several times, but never took notice of the contradictory name!
