1. I don't think you're repressed if you don't like porn. I think you're repressed for
fretting about OTHER people liking porn.

Thanks though!

PS: When did I suggest everyone should have the same likes as me? That's kind of the point: let everyone like what they want, so long as they don't violate anyone else's rights in doing so.

2. I would be a little clearer on what is meant by "people"
People have a right to porn, but by that I mean adults. I don't think children, especially young children, should be shown pornographic photos or movies, as I feel it can harm them emotionally and psychologically, and give them a warped view of sexuality and the human body.

8. I don't think anyone has a "right" to porn.
The sad thing is that there ARE rights people should have to safety and dignity and decent behavior in the society around them that are less important to many folks than porn.

27. Oooh. "Decent behavior".
The right wing has been decrying the indecent for a long time. Welcome to their ranks.

FYI, the right to do what you wish with your own body is primary - any threat to that is the true indignity.

40. She didn't say people don't have a right to *make* porn
she said people don't have a right to *have* it. If no one chose to make porn, then obviously there would be no right to have it because it wouldn't be available. So as far as that goes, she's right. But adults have a right to make porn if they choose, and if porn is available adults have a right to buy it.

Yet another miscommunication about this subject.

14. I Say Everyone Can Feel About Porn However They Want, And It Ain't Their Damn Business How Someone
else feels.

Someone like porn a whole whole lot? Yay for them!

Someone thinks porn is a dangerous evil on our society that just MUST be stopped? Yay for them!

Personally, I could give a frog's fat ass how someone feels one way or the other when it comes down to it.

It's. Just. Porn.

To each their friggin own with this one.

33. I want to talk about "choice" for a minute
Edited on Fri Aug-24-07 08:04 PM by gollygee
None of us who don't like porn has said that we don't think women should have the choice to act in porn. If a woman wants to act in porn, that option should be available to her as she is an adult. That seems to be agreed upon across the board.

I would like people to consider what kinds of choices are available to working class women. If you have no college, you can work as a waitress, where you'll potentially be sexually harassed too; a receptionist, which pays about $6 an hour (I've done it, and secretaries now require a 4-year college degree and 3 years experience so that isn't available to working-class women anymore - I've done that too now and know the requirements); hmm there are a couple other low-paying jobs I'm not thinking of now. If you put in a small amount of post-high school work, you can be a hair/nail stylist (I don't know the official title for that work), which also pays poorly; or an LPN, which doesn't pay that well either. On paper, the jobs available to working class men are also available to women - changing people's oil, spraying chemicals on people's yards, doing entry-level construction work, etc. But how many women actually do those jobs? And if there is an opening and men and women are applying, how likely is it that a woman will be chosen? How often do you see women in those jobs? I know those jobs don't pay well either, but they do pay better than the others. I've done payroll at a couple of these types of places and I know they pay better than what I made as a receptionist and what my friends have made at working-class jobs.

Then what if the woman is a single mother? She has day care to worry about, so on top of paying her bills, she has to pay someone to watch her child(ren). Day care can be done well by a licensed place, or you can have the people who rent from your sister's in-laws and owe them money and therefore will do it cheap. Guess which is a better place and is safer? Guess which costs more?

In that situation, if you are physically attractive, you have a few other options available. You can be a prostitute, or you can work in porn, or be some other kind of sex worker. If a woman enjoys that work and wants to do it, then she's found the right place for her and I am glad she's found a job she enjoys. But I worry that a lot of women end up doing that kind of work because that's the only way to pay the bills and put their kid(s) into a safe daycare facility. I question how much of a real choice that is. And then the prettiest and best are in one kind of porn, and those who aren't so pretty or don't meet whatever requirements there are end up doing whatever kind of porn they have to do to survive, and I think everyone here has said that some of the porn available is of more questionable taste than other.

So it's the whole system - the system is set up where women have to have an education, which sounds easier than it is if you are working class (education doesn't come cheap), or they make minimum wage or slightly above that, or they are sex workers. On paper, there are other options (working class jobs typically done by men), but those options are not as available as they could be.

Anyway, I don't want porn to be outlawed or anything like that. I want women to have more options available to them so that if they *want* to go into porn they can, but they don't ever get into a situation where they don't feel like they have any other options.

To call women who don't personally like porn "anti-choice" when they don't want to eliminate the choice and in fact want it to be more of a real choice is disingenuous at best and really repugnant to me as a very Pro-Choice woman.
