1. August is 'summer under the stars' and they devote an entire day's programming to One star.
Yesterday, it was Ann Miller.

6. They are a disappointment this year. Instead of picking the STARS
they've been picking the B actors, supporting players, and generally less interesting people in film. Yes, they did do Jane Fonda, but really, that's not why most of us watch that channel!

In years past, they've devoted days to the real greats of the golden age of film, with sampling from the early work in one reel wonders to the work of the mature stars. There was a reason to honor those people with a full day of programming.

This year it's been pimples like Reagan, minor talents if they had talent at all, and uninteresting at that. Fonda was the high point, and they didn't even pick her best films.

Now if they'd done character actors instead of B-movie stars, it might have been much more interesting.

It was GREAT to see Auntie Mame again.

21. That's true, forgot about Roz
which is a little crazy since I'd set my alarm so I could wake up in time to see "The Women."

Still, it seems to be pretty thin this year.

I've been Jonesing for a Bette Davis day, I guess.

9. Are Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper chopped liver?
Come on, have a heart! It's 31 days of movies, and if they did schedule a few totally unexpected choices, they did round up the usual suspects as well: Elizabeth Taylor, Errol Flynn, Robert Mitchum, et al, and with a lot of the requisite great movies (Becket, Pride of the Yankees, On the Town, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Marty etc.).

22. Yeah, and at least we didn't have Adolphe Menjou day.
Edited on Sat Aug-25-07 09:26 AM by CBHagman
TCM has probably done one at some point, though.

Mind you, I'll watch movies with Menjou in them (He was in some great ones), but having seen footage of his testimony during the witch hunt and blacklisting era, I'm disgusted by the man himself.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0579663/bio

Adolphe's rather hardcore right-wing Republican politics hurt his later reputation, as he was made a scapegoat for his allegiance and cooperation during the Joseph McCarthy Red Scare era.

The AM profiles doesn't mention that many lives and careers were ruined during the blacklist period.

23. I'd certainly watch his performance in "Paths of Glory" and Menjou had some
incredible comic performances in the 30s and 40s.

13. There's a great film noir with Crawford called "Scandal Sheet" — about the
publisher of a tabloid who accidentally kills his ex-wife. It's on tomorrow afternoon. And then "All the King's Men" is on in the evening.

16. I first saw "Scandal Sheet" on the Mystery Channel a few years ago...
and then it disappeared. I think it's a TCM premiere; I'm going to TiVo it for sure and burn it to a DVD.

19. TiVo is a life changer! You always have something you want to watch.
And I never have to miss Countdown — which I usually watch while I'm getting ready for work in the morning.

4. I could stand his pictures and I groaned when I saw that
I love to stretch out on the sofa and watch some of the old movies. I love Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes, the musicals and old detective shows. But it seems like they too are hooked up on war, war war.

stuff like the "Beach Blanket" films early in the day!

8. I've been watching Ron...
He made some bad ones! They are playing King's Row now and they said it was the best, but it's an old soap opera. It looks like maybe the meant they spent more money on this one -- it looks niceer.

a pretty stinky actor.

"Blue Velvet."

18. Kirk Douglas is on Sunday and DO NOT MISS "Ace in the Hole", Billy Wilder's
film about sensationalism in the news business! They were talking about exploiting tragedy for news headlines even then.
