KKKarl in trouble for calling Barney a "lump"
by Mark Silva

Dana Perino is a dog-lover.

So who better to send, in defense of First Dog Barney than Perino, the White House deputy press secretary.

It seems that Karl Rove, the outgoing deputy chief of staff, had some unkind words for the Scottish terrier that roams the South Lawn -- called the little doggie a "lump."

So the folks at National Public Radio's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! invited Perino to stand up for the presidential pedigree.

Perino knows her way around dogs. Her own beautiful Vizsla, Henry, is a well-trained, partisan pooch, trained to retrieve flip-flops on the command: "John Kerry."

So this is one canine smack-down in which Rove has met his match.

"I wouldn’t call him a lump,'' Perino says of Barney on the radio. And, as for Rove: "Of course... Karl is on his way out the door.''

And, asked if she ever draws pooper-scooper duty at the White House, Perino says: "Well... I deal with the press a lot.''

Tune in today for the show produced by NPR, Chicago Public Radio and executive producer Doug Berman and aired on 425 stations. And here are some excerpts, courtesy of NPR:

(First, a contextual note: It was the New York Times which started this, with these lines from a a farewell interview with Rove:"There was one stark sign that Mr. Rove was truly leaving,'' the Times' Jim Rutenberg wrote for Sunday's editions. "He expressed what no White House aide would express publicly, though many very senior officials have shared the sentiment privately: that is, distaste for the president's beloved Scottish terrier, Barney, who is seen by some as aloof and entitled. ''Barney's a lump,'' he joked.)

9. Barney does NOT like the asshole GWB at all...
...take this from a long time Scottie owner and lover.

Scotties have a certain in-bred trait of backing away from something they do not like, fear, want away from, etc. Take a look at Barney some time around Monkey Boy: Head facing the asshole, head down, ears down, butt up in the air, head shaking from side to side and backing up. Scotties were bred to go down things like badger holes and hunt varmits that that....so the in-bred trait is what makes them act like that since they back out of a varmit hole if there is danger.

Barney does NOT like that asshole one little bit.

10. The dog is just another prop. But he is not impressed by executive orders
and since he is not in uniform, he can't be ordered about. Terriers are rather picky and insist respect be earned. bush does not deserve respect and Barney knows it.

The dog does dislike the chimp, so he didn't lend the air of devotion Rove was expecting. If Rove can't use something, he probably doesn't like it.

3. Oh, they're all so clever.
Dana trained her dog to retrieve flip flops with the command "John Kerry". Isn't that hilarious???? Too bad the FOX News Half-Hour Comedy show got cancelled. She could have had a brilliant career there when she left the White House.

6. Poor Barney
He deserves to be around people who can appreciate him.

Barney is, after all, the most human character in the White House. His charm, intelligence and wit easily outshine those of his owner. He'd even make a better presidential candidate -- indeed, a better president -- than any of the Republican front runners.
