Anybody Have Any Idea What Our Congress Critters Are Hearing From Voters While On Vacation ???
I saw the David Swanson piece, but not much else.

Personally, I'm hoping that they are having their asses chewed by their constituents. I'm hoping it hasn't been a pleasant vacation for any of them. I'm hoping when they come back into session, they are fearful for their jobs, and will start showing some fight!

But if wishes were horses...

3. It's pretty obvious.
What we're saying, and what they're hearing are two different things.

5. True... But They Were Hearing Mainly From The Beltway Braintrust Babies Before
I'm hoping that while on vacation, they are feeling the heat from real voters, and will start to question the advice of some of their tepid Congressional Whisperers.

6. I had a one on one with my Congressman.
All I wanted to talk about was holding these people accountable. I asked him if they ignore the subpoenas if they would use inherent contempt. He put his hands on the table, leaned forward and in a very forceful manner said "Absolutely!!"
He said that after all these years of no questions, they resent the fact that anybody is asking them now.

He's a member of the oversite committee. If you want to check it out, this is what I talked about.

This woman made me sick.

I loved the way he met with us. There were about a dozen of us. Each nametag had a number. That was the order in which you got to go into a little meeting room and tell him how you feel. He is just a great guy.

7. I called my critter's office and left a strongly worded but polite
messsage with the young lady who answered the phone. She sort of sighed as if to say "Oh no another one of THESE callers". Maybe I read too much into her reaction but I came away with the distinct impression it was NOT a pleasant vacation for him. He did vote correctly on FISA but I still don't trust him.

I also asked if there were any "town hall" type meetings where he would be taking questions and the only one was scheduled for a time when I was away fishing for three days. But I heard from one of my neighbors the atmosphere was semi hostile with most of the unhappiness directed toward Pelosi and the dem leadership.

13. Mine had a town hall; meeting here, which I...
posted about and the thread sank like a stone. Probably because nobody wanted to hear about what's REALLY going on.

Iraq was hardly brought up at all, and only one side comment about impeachment. The rest of the two hours was taken up with complaints about the Broadwater gas terminal, the crooked electrical company, dredging a few of the creeks, fixing the jetties, Social Security, helicopter flyovers on the way to the Hamptons, and one question about Cuba.

So, that's what my liberal Democratic congressman dealt with that night. No grand calls to impeach or immediately withdraw fronm Iraq. Nada. None at all. Just local concerns.

You all may now return to your fantasies about how this democracy stuff works.

15. I Hear Ya, And Ya Know... That's The Way Democracy Is Supposed To Work In Normal Times...
These are NOT normal times!

And normally I wouldn't care if the Greater Rutherford Quilting Chapter wanted a resolution on the wonders of batting, or if the South Argus Little League wanted help in visiting the Nation's Capital, but jeebus those sort of concerns reflect badly on the people's awareness of the crisis we're in.

I sometimes feel as there is a subset of liberals\progressives that has NO CLUE as to what the rest of us are talking about. Hell... most of the damned nation for that matter.

If you ain't outraged, you ain't payin attention!

16. Maybe, but that's what the people around here are...
concerned with. Probably repeated hundreds of times around the country.

There is a lot of outrage about a lot of the big issues, but no one seriously expects them to be dealt with in a any sort of hurry. That's why they're big issues.

18. Well... Looks Like Arlen Has, LOL !!!
Specter finds voters just plain angry

<snip>

The issues have changed from year to year, but this town hall tour through the state's 67 counties has been the same through the decades. This year, however, the Republican has seen a marked change in the tone and intensity of his questioners.

"The meetings are a lot bigger ... and there's a lot more passion and a lot more anger," he said as he headed from one meeting to another across the rolling, green hills of Washington County. "And they're angry at everything. ... They're boiling mad about Iraq. They're almost that mad about immigration.

"They're as mad about Gonzales as they are about immigration. They're mad at the president for taking all the power he has. There are a lot of people talking about habeus corpus. Where in the hell would you expect to have all these people talking about habeus corpus?"

In a voice that still betrays the flat intonation of his native Kansas, he said, "You can barley get through the litany of screams."

Through two days of meetings this past week, Mr. Specter sought to underscore his image of independence. It proved impossible to strike a balance that would please all audiences on the war. His questioners included defenders of the administration's Iraq policies, but more of them -- who were also more impassioned -- were critics.

Link (.pdf file): http://democraticleader.house.gov/docUploads/2007-CALENDAR.pdf

I love how her calendar refers to the August Recess (all Recesses) as "District Work Period".

I'm sure it true to some extent, but...

29. Mine has disappeared....
She usually sends out tri-fold news letters or postcards informing constituents where and when she'll be hosting meetings. This time, not a word, nothing on her web site, no news available by calling her local or DC offices. Standard response is that she's "working on the important issues coming up after the recess." Which, translated into our native tongue, means she's hiding out in some seaside motel, keeping her head down and praying for the next session to start so she can get started working on those important issues -- with 3,000 miles as a buffer between her and her "people."

Her voting record and special interest endorsement numbers are really pretty good on almost every issue I care about. She gets a zero rating from hate groups like the anti-choice crowd, single-digit favorables from idiots like the national taxpayers union, close to a 100% rating from the ACLU, similarly high marks from civil rights groups, mediocre rankings from business interests and very good marks from labor, good environmental record, outstanding marks from liberal groups, and so on...

More here: http://tinyurl.com/yu7nl4

So why hasn't she shown up in her district? She's one of the "more important things to do" crowd on impeachment. And that seems to be the kiss of death these days. Which begs the question, if impeachment is now the litmus test, along with Iraq, why aren't more of them just telling Pelosi to kiss their asses and signing on to HR-333?
