Chertoff to replace Gonzo as Attorney General?
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 12:02 PM by jefferson_dem
That's what "some" are saying...

Subbing Chertoff for Gonzales as DoJ
by Jonathan Singer, Sun Aug 26, 2007 at 12:57:45 PM EST

It hasn't happened yet despite the fact that Alberto Gonzales is clearly not up to the job and has used his position for nefarious purposes, but will the Attorney General finally leave his positions? Paul Bedard of US News is hearing that it's a possibility.

The buzz among top Bushies is that beleaguered Attorney General Alberto Gonzales finally plans to depart and will be replaced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Why Chertoff? Officials say he's got fans on Capitol Hill, is untouched by the Justice prosecutor scandal, and has more experience than Gonzales did, having served as a federal judge and assistant attorney general.

Clearly, someone as able as Chertoff, who oversaw the preparations for and response to Hurricane Katrina, led the effort to rewrite federal immigration law, and who apparently bases assessments of terrorist threats on "gut feeling", would be a fine replacement for Gonzales as Attorney General, right? Oy. It almost almost makes you wish Gonzales stuck around through the end of Bush's presidency...

7. No way-they can't afford the confirmation hearings
Gitmo, warrantless wiretapping, the lawyer firings, the K-Street project/Abramoff, the illegal war would all be brought up and the new nominee would have to denounce them or not get confirmed. Also, of course, it would be a political bloodletting for the Republicans to have the "papers" filled with nothing but the Democrats smashing every illegal thing they have done over the last 6 1/2 years over and over and over.

Can't happen from their point of view.

10. time to play musical chairs with the deck furniture?
questions:

1. what does chertoff's gut tell him?

2. if cheroff is moved to justice, will he need to be confirmed by the senate?

3. will bush do a recess appointment to avoid confirmation hearings?

4. what will the dems do? give chertoff a pass? play let's make a deal with bush? keep powder dry? pump oxygen into the room to prevent it from being sucked out? tell us they don't have the votes? show some balls? show some balls and then apologize for showing said balls?
