Is There A Way To Google Bomb The Rolling Stone Iraq Swindle Article ???
And.. is there such a thing a Google carpet bombing?

If my dusty brain cells recollect correctly, you link up a story with a certain word or phrase, and every time somebody hits that link, the story comes up eventually at the top of the page.

If that's true, Google Carpet Bombing, would be to take 3, 5, 10, etc. words or phrases, and link them all back to the story. That way, you'd get a wider chance that the story is spread.

Is that possible? Cause I have no idea what I'm sayin here, LOL!

1. I don't know about that but
I intend to buy several copies of the Rolling Stone in which that article appears and enjoin others to read it and pass it along.

6. Google recently changed their algorithims and took out the 'Miserable Failure' reference
"Google Kills Bush's Miserable Failure Search & Other Google Bombs
After just over two years, Google has finally defused the "Google Bomb" that has returned US President George W. Bush at the top of its results in a search on miserable failure. The move wasn't a post-State Of The Union Address gift for Bush. Instead, it's part of an overall algorithm change designed to stop such mass link pranks from working.

A search today now shows the US White House page carrying Bush's name is no longer top listed. Also gone are pages about Michael Moore and former US president Jimmy Carter that were on the first page of results due to Google bombing actions.

What's not missing are articles about the Google bombing incident itself, including my own article I wrote back in January 2004 from when I worked at Search Engine Watch. The algorithm change hasn't impacted these.

This is because the change is designed to stop the pranks from happening rather than legitimate commentary about such activities. Google isn't saying exactly how this is being done. But Google says it's done automatically, without any human intervention.

"It's completely algorithmic," said Google spam fighting czar Matt Cutts, adding "we're not going to claim it's 100 percent perfect."

7. Read Something Similar... But What DoesTHIS Mean (Hightlighted)...
<snip>

On January 25th, 2007 Google announced on its official Google Webmaster Central blog that they now have "an algorithm that minimizes the impact of many Googlebombs ."<12> The algorithm change had an immediate effect, dropping the well-known "miserable failure" link to the White House off the front page. Instead, the page contained mainly pages which discuss the miserable failure bomb.<13>. A related Google bomb was the No.1 ranking held by Tony Blair's website for the term "liar". As of May 2, 2007, the bomb had disappeared both from Google and Yahoo, but not from the UK version of MSN. Google bombs in which the target page actually contains the search word(s) were not affected.

I mean I'm reading it, but I'm not "getting" it.

10. Search words = 'keywords' ... in other words, nowhere in the Chimp's bio do the words
"miserable failure" appear, therefore it wouldn't show up in the search algorithim.

However, if his bio *does* mention his cheerleader days in college, you could make an effective Google Bomb using something like 'cheerleader George', or other words to that effect, as your anchor text.

Anchor text is the words you use for the link itself, such as Wholesale Merchandise or Crazy Monkey or even War Chimp ...They are placed between the <a href=xxxx> and </a> tags

See, in the first example, which links to one of my wholesale sites, the words 'wholesale merchandise' are included in the page and it would be picked up by the new algorithim.

The last two examples wouldn't be picked up, as the words 'crazy monkey' and 'war chimp' do not appear anywhere on the page.

Basically, the new algorithim searches the site content for relevancy. It's still possible to make Google Bombs,,, if you use actual keywords from the site.

11. So... We'd Just Have To Use 'Iraq Swindle', Or Any Headline Grabber That Actually...
Exists in the text? Is that correct?

He sure gave us a lot to work with.

Now for dispersement... is it better for everyone to use the same phrase, or can anybody pick a favorite. and you'd get the same effect???

And (LOL!!!) how do you make one again???

Several sites using the same anchor text would be the best way to do it. The search engines would pick up on it more and move it to the top of the results.

Bush Bio Changes For Miserable Failure Query Due To White House Change
Since 2004, a search on Google and Yahoo for "miserable failure" has almost always ranked the the official George W. Bush biography tops. Link bombing, as I've covered here, caused it to happen. But yesterday, folks at Threadwatch spotted that it has changed.

What happened? The White House moved the bio to a new page, which has caused the old page to disappear for that search temporarily. Now, at least for me, the bio is ranking tops again at a new location. The change is something a future president probably won't like.

The old page lived here:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html

You can see a copy of it via these listings at the Internet Archive. It was up since at least September 2001.

The new page lives here:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/

The old page uses a meta refresh command to send both humans and search engine spiders from the old to the new page. A fast meta refresh, to my knowledge, is treated by at least Google as a 301 permanent redirect.

Over at Yahoo, the old address is still ranking tops. At Google, yesterday the bio was completely gone."

http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/060921-060552

I read a while back that Google had changed the algorithims to where they didn't pick up "negative references" to people anymore. I'm searchig for the article now.

12. Thanks for the link! Now, to google bomb this, I would make a link using the title
Like this: The Great Iraq Swindle

See, since the words "The Great Iraq Swindle " appear on the page, it will be picked up by the new algorithims. On the second page of this article, where it is talking about the contracting firm Custer Battles, it says "But even being the clumsiest war profiteers of all time was not enough to bring swift justice upon the heads of Mr. Custer and Mr. Battles", so someone could make a google bomb using the clumsiest war profiteers of all time and it would be picked up.

What Google is trying to do is to remove irrelevant links and results. It's like searching for 'Lawyers in Miami', and finding results selling penis enlargement pills because the webmaster slipped the keywords in somewhere. They do this a lot by using white font on white background, making the text invisible to you and me, but visible to the search spiders <~~ hold mouse button down and drag over blank area...

That also works when posting here and on other boards..people can put invisible links to their websites in between paragraphs, and no one would be the wiser. It's a way to build incoming links to your site, which searh engines *love* and gives you a higher ranking on the search engine's list, without appearing to spam a board.

19. Thank you for the explanation.
I'm about to change the Great Turtle Race link I have in my signature to The Great Iraq Swindle.

I suppose that since you already used that link in your post, my change on this page will not help. However, it will help on other pages. I'll try to post more frequently for a while.

Thanks again. I'll bookmark this so I will always have the explanation. :hi:

21. Had Ta Use DU's Very Own From The HTML Look-Up Table !!!
<link:URL|Text>
URL is without the "http://".
Example: <link:www.dcscripts.com|DCScripts>

So...

Mine became:

<link:www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/16076312/the_great_iraq_swindle| Screw The Taxpayer For Millions>

But use the square brackets instead of < and > (square brakets make things disappear), and paste the thing into your sig line.

BTW - It's easier to see what you're doing if you do it in Wordpad, then paste it into you options!

KEWL!!!

Now that you have a link in your signature, you can just substitute the new URL and the new name when you update your signature for a different link.

In other words, that's what I just did. No instructions necessary. I just filled in The Great Iraq Swindle information in the places where I had the Great Turtle Race information.

:) After all this time, who could remember how to do it?

By the way, the Great Turtle Race has ended, but you can still see a reenactment by going to http://www.greatturtlerace.com .

24. Glad to help out! It's one of the few things I can contribute to intelligently here ;-)
When I first got hurt 4 years ago, I was homebound for a long time. I decided I was going to learn how to make this computer make money for me, as I couldn't just sit and do nothing, and terrorizing chat rooms got boring real quick.

I didn't know a thing about making websites or anything, so I asked around. I printed out tutorials on HTML and many other subjects. Then I had to learn about internet marketing, search engine optimization, blah blah blah... I still don't know much what I'm doing, but I have gotten a few of my pages in the #1 Google and Yahoo spots for certain keywords.
