Grace Slick: republican?
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 04:01 PM by Warren Stupidity
It was alleged without substantiation in some other thread that rock'n'roll legend Grace Slick is a republican. Being of a certain age, that allegation really hurt. Grace was an icon of my age, unlike that turdwipe nugent, who I finally figured out started with the Amboy Dukes and whose brief period of fame was long after the magic of 67 had faded.

A bit of the google reveals that at some point she was quoted as saying she is a "life-long Republican". That, to anyone who knows her history, like for example the time she tried to get herself and Abbie Hoffman into the White House, LSD equipped, in order to dose Tricia Nixon, is just Grace making a joke.

To anyone who shares my lingering infatuation with the summer of love, rest assured our beloved Grace has not gone rightwing. She is of course a total nutcase, how could she not be? But here she is speaking out in her own words in an interview from the San Francisco Gate:

"You just look at what's going on and what can be done to make it better to assist people. It's a leftist position and I don't know any myself Republican musicians. Now I'm sure there are some. But I personally don't know any. It was a change from a sort of Republican attitude -- which I would like to do again -- from a stiff, war-like attitude. We elected, God bless him, Eisenhower as president. Oh boy, a warrior. Let's have more warriors. No, let's not. It was a push for everybody in the sense, not a push for white people. On the Statue of Liberty -- bring me your poor and your miserable and your unfunny and whatever -- that should apply. Why should it just apply to white people? Those were the questions we were asking.

We don't have a democracy right now. It's a monarchy. There's nothing about it that's a democracy. So we're in worse shape now than we were and the stuff we were trying to change in the '60s. Look at it. Look at it from every standpoint and we're in worse shape now with the possible exception of black people making headway. And God bless 'em, it's about f--king time.

Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert. Those are the guys I look at who are telling me pretty much the truth. And they throw humor into it which makes it much more interesting to listen to. The comedians -- as did Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, people like that, Richard Pryor -- you listen to comedians they're probably going to be telling you the truth, with humor thrown in. Now if I listen to them, then I'll probably know how to approach it. Wolf Blitzer will ask questions, but he won't get all up in that -- know what I mean? "

Some of us have never forgotten. Grace is one of the good ones.

3. Thanks for nipping it in the bud
Something about Grace and life-long Republican just doesn't process, make that everything about it doesn't process.

Although the late starship crap was some of the worst commercial rock'n'roll ever. "I Bilked This City" indeed.

5. Thanks for posting this
I, too, saw that thread and was quite taken aback at the notion that Grace was a right-winger. I googled a bit, but not long enough to find anything to verify it either way. Thanks for posting. My mind is a little bit more at ease now... :toast:

She sure is one of the good ones!

where Michelle Phillips toured the grounds of rich old rocker's homes? Sad business indeed.

8. Thanks! I didn't believe it for a minute, but I'm glad to see documented proof to refute the stupid
idea. Thanks for going to the trouble to find it.

10. Well, she is - and admits so herself -- I'll even add the substance below this time.
http://www.danablankenhorn.com/2006/06/whos_grace_slic.html

The following statement from the LINK to GRACE SLICK in your piece on "Who Is Grace Slick Today?" is hard for me to take as a Liberal Democrat and Hippie since the 60's:
"Despite being an icon of the liberal '60s counter-culture, Slick describes herself as a "life-long Republican"."

There was also a music bio show that involved her and the same thing was mentioned. Of that I wish I could link because that is a bit more substantial than a blog.

Oh, given the number of people who respond to me in GD with unsubstantiated comments, I decided to join in and do the same thing for once.

13. I addressed that.
The misfit toys link just refers back to the 'life-long republican' quote, without any other substantiation. Your google search all hits the same idiocy.

But please explain how this life-long Republican could have been quoted in a most un-Republican fashion back in May 07?

Please provide actual substantial documentation, other than this one stupid quote and comments on it, that validates your position.

I guess she would have been a life-long Republican if her life had ended at 19.

But life goes on, and shit happen, ya know?

Peace...

Unless she's got early onset something horrible, she's probably a recovered republican. It's not that rare.

Look whats happening out in the streets
Got a revolution got to revolution
Hey Im dancing down the streets
Got a revolution got to revolution
Aint it amazing all the people I meet
Got a revolution got to revolution
One generation got old
One generation got soul
This generation got no destination to hold
Pick up the cry
Hey now its time for you and me
Got a revolution got to revolution
Come on now were marching to the sea
Got a revolution got to revolution
Who will take it from you
We will and who are we

28. Grace is really astute at "tongue in cheek" humor.
This sounds like the typical Repuke twisting of quotes & outright lying about facts to suit their goals.

Nuge is a true psycho, listen to his twisted views & it doesn't take long to realize that.
But Grace had too much fun :party:living a "liberal" life to claim Repuke status now.

i catch her wavelength. i too am a "lifelong republican," but i know perfectly well that what my party label is has no relation to what i am. it's a bullshit identity trap, man. and buyin' that is just playin' into the game of the corporate papacy's sanctifying our nouveau divine 'rite' of kings -- that rite being endless war for 'peace,' a piece of your treasury baby! our monarchy still gotta strip the rebellion outta the serfs and supplant hollywood shrines as our new pilgrimages, cuz there's nothin like that ol' time religion to keep the people down, ya dig?
