Renzi, after investigation by FBI, won't run in 2008

U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi ended months of speculation Thursday, announcing he will not seek re-election in 2008.

The Arizona Republican's announcement came as little surprise to political insiders who had watched Renzi's standing deteriorate after the FBI began investing a land deal along the San Pedro River in Southern Arizona, an inquiry that included the search of a Renzi family insurance business in Sonoita.

Renzi helped promote the land sale that netted $4.5 million for his former business partner and campaign donor James Sandlin, according to state records and officials. The land's water rights are considered critical to the future of both the San Pedro and nearby Fort Huachuca.
Renzi, 49, has denied any wrongdoing. But the controversy also landed him in the middle of a congressional investigation into the firing of eight U.S. attorneys, including Arizona's Paul Charlton.

7. And He's Only 49
I wish we had an age limit in Congress--out by 65 or something. Congress shouldn't be a branch of the Smithsonian's dinosaur exhibit.

Sounds like Renzi should have accepted US DOJ's plea deal in April when it was available and on the table! If he's announcing he's not running next fall, then he must realize he'll be in a jail cell by then!

Am under the impression there are some really big indictments coming-out right after Labor Day. It sounds like Renzi will be one of the congressmen mentioned in the indictments with a # after the word "Congressman" to denote he's an unindicted congressman!

Renzi: Despite the rumors, I'm not resigning

Via The Hill, we learn Rep. Renzi says he's not leaving:

In an attempt to counter reports and squelch rumors that he would resign his House seat, Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.) said Friday he has no plans to leave Congress.

“For several weeks, I have been the subject of leaked stories, conjecture, and false attacks about a land exchange,” Renzi said. “None of them bear any resemblance to the truth, including the rumor that I am planning on resigning.”

Citing unnamed sources, the Phoenix Business Journal reported Thursday that Renzi was planning to resign .....

Renzi tries to quiet resignation rumors

In an attempt to counter reports and squelch rumors ...........

Renzi’s resignation or retirement would be a coup for Democrats, who have fought in vain in recent years to make progress in what is probably Arizona’s truest swing district.

......

The district was designed as a swing district and gave President Bush 51 percent and 54 percent in the 2000 and 2004 elections, respectively.

.......

In Arizona, candidates do not need to live in the district in which they are running.

Arizona law dictates that Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) must call a special primary between 75 and 105 days of the vacancy and a special general election within 35 to 45 days of the primary.
