11. He was the
fire-wall, to protect the president. There was an interesting article about this in TIME last month.

Note that the announcement wasn't released on Friday, when there is the usual "dump." Bush opted to keep it quiet over the weekend.

8. It's an up-and-down
thing, almost like when you determine when to trade in a car, versus investing more in repairs. The Attorney General was worth the investment for quite a while, and as TIME reported about a month ago, his value had been reduced entirely to serving as a fire-wall for Bush. It is significant that he is now resigning in disgrace.

101. 2 Reasons: One short term and one medium term
The decision to "do it now" was prompted by Warner's "bombshell break with the WH" -- such as it was.

The decision to "do it at all" was a reaction to the move to impeach Gonzo -- it was real. They knew a quick, painless impeachment process -- with our without resignation to cut it short -- would be a model for "the real one" the country is pummeling the DC Dems about during this vacation.

It would erase a lot of very useful rationaliztions for inaction that are the regime's current firewall.

33. Question is "How Long Can We Go Without A CONFIRMED AG?"
Bush is going to have to put up a nominee for AG before the Senate for Confirmation Hearings.

THis is going to be a defining moment for how Democrats will handle the scandals of this Administration for the remainder of Bush's term.

THe next nominee should experience a withering examination from the Senate. And maybe Democrats will not just take them at their word this time.

131. Rove and Gonzales. The two who engineered the attorney firings. Is that the reason?
Was the heat on that issue what led to both? If so, we have Dianne Feinstein to thank.

Bitch about the Dems all you want (and I do) but the 2006 election got rid of Rummy, Rove and Gonzo three of my most hated Bushies.

Bush had to turn the heat down in DC in preparation for the Sept Iraq debate.

82. I do not
think that the Attorney General's office is traditionally tied to international politics per say, but at a time when there is confusion or an uproar, anything could happen.

I think that it is more likely that another more likely reason is that there was another crisis on track. Remember that there was a time when many in the DoJ were prepared to resign .... including Comey and the FBI Director. When the Director verified Comey's testimony on the hospital scene, it was huge -- even if the media didn't report it as such.

I know that many, many career people at Justice were extremely unhappy with Gonzales. I think he was going to be left in charge of a lot of empty offices in early September.

104. worst case scenario
The new FISA rules say the AG and IG sign off on everything. Should a 'Terra'ist event happen between now and the start of the next Session (i though the Dems had a skeleton crew running, to avoid recess appts?), will they just need the IG's ok for "action" of any sort?

Lotsa questions, you're right, weird timing. I suspect as well that something else will be coming down the pike this week.

In the meantime, i nominate Patrick Fitzgerald for AG! One can dream of course...

Here's to hoping good things come of this!

111. I do not think
there is any real chance of a recess appointment. It would be another abscess on the DoJ, at a time the administration doesn't want congressional dentists poking around.

It is unlikely the Cheneyites would ever nominate Mr. Fitzgerald, and congress would not approve him. However, they might approve James Comey, and that would be almost as good.

97. Time for retrospectives( TPM Muck): Gonzo Top Six Fibs
Lie, Lie, Lie, Lie, Lie, Lie: Gonzales' Top Six Fibs
By Paul Kiel - August 17, 2007, 1:20 PM
The verdict is clear: Alberto Gonzales is the lying-est attorney general in recent history. "I don't trust you," Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) told him last month. Ranking member Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) sounded him out for his "lack of credibility." "He tells the half truth, the partial truth and everything but the truth," said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that Gonzales. “He’s one sneaky, lying S.O.B., to put it bluntly" is Rep. David Obey's (D-WI) frank take.

But even though we've been cataloging the troubles, and Gonzales' dwindling credibility, at the Justice Department for the past several months, we hadn't yet done a rundown. So we've collected below what are, as far as we can tell, Gonzales' six most brazen public untruths.

To do this, we were forced to constrain the endeavor. Gonzales' amazingly faulty memory is clearly cause for strong suspicion -- but his countless "I don't recall"s have not yet been proven to be dishonest. And there have been a stream of dubious statements -- such as that he'd never fire a U.S. attorney for political reasons or his insistence that they were fired for "performance" reasons -- countered by weighty circumstantial evidence. But we've set a high bar. Certainly we expect our little list to lengthen in the future as more evidence is produced -- and as Gonzales continues to speak publicly.

109. I wonder if good ol' Fredo realizes he's now in for the down side of being
one layer away from a criminal president: he's the designated scapegoat for everything that can't be buried or dumped on somebody else (hello, Tenet). I think he must be rather stupid. He committed terrible crimes to please his boss (and probably to gratify his own vanity too), and all along he was being prepped as a scapegoat in case one was needed. He must have actually trusted his pal Bush's loyalty despite knowing even more than we do about Bush's whole life's pattern of cravenness and betrayal on every level - yes, stupid.

And now they are saying CHERTOFF is to be his replacement???? (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=2966850) Another monster, one showed his true colors for all to see during his criminal, murderous mismanagement and blatant lies in the Hurricane Katrina tragedy.

Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 11:27 AM by jumptheshadow
Why did Rove and then Gonzales resign unexpectedly? Are the two resignations related?

And this is the part I hesitate to bring up on DU? Did Specter really have a bombshell? Were these resignations part of the whatever negotiations took place? I mean, I dislike Specter as much as the next person, but I think it's fair to bring up the question.

145. I just heard the Politico guy, Mike Allen (?) on C-SPAN and he said it was NO COINCIDENCE that
KKKRove left, followed by Gonzo. My guess is....Specter OR the Senate Judiciary as a whole, have some garbage on them both.

Let us hope that one can't escape the consequences of lying to Congress by simply resigning.

154. I agree Bleever. I certainly hope that a resignation doesn't allow
him (or KKKarl or any of these criminals) to escape prosecution.

164. This IS good news.
I can't wait for the Confirmation Hearings on the new AG.
Ladies and gentlemen, watch and listen to the questions the Dems will be asking.
I think it's safe to say, they are going to be tuff.
At least, they better be!
Let's wait and see.
He's not out of there officially until the 17th.
The congress reconvenes next Tuesday. It shouldn't be long after that that we'll know!

Many people here a DU predicted this. Gonzo was going to lay low as possible till his replacement could be installed unfettered by any in congress. We knew this had more than a 90% chance happening and if Vegas had odds i would of put money on it.

It's about protecting the flanks if a exit plan is needed. The aftermath of impeachment of Gonzo with congress still in session would have been dangerous:shrug:

173. Oh Happy Day!
Watch Rove and Gonzo get "lawyered up."

Someone at the WH and/or DOJ has squealed to the judiciary committee. I think Leahy went to the WH for a reason. He had some goods on Gonzo.
