Dear Senator Reid: Get thee on the first flight
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 07:46 AM by cali
back to D.C. It's time to call the Senate into a pro forma session. The last thing the American people and the Justice Department need is a hack recess appointment AG. We need hearings and assurances from any nominee that the Justice Department will no longer be used as a crass political tool to further undermine democracy.

I'm betting you knew last Friday that Mr. G had stepped down, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Having done that; get. back. now.

To allow bushco a recess appt would be nigh on unforgivable.

1. Doesn't have to be Reid, a local Senator can handle it
You have Webb, Mikulski, and Cardin locally.

hell. If Harry doesn't carry through after talking about it, I suggest we need a new Senate leader.

4. Do the Dems need any more motivation than the specter of A/G Ted Olson?
I think not.

6. They shouldn't but
I worry that the dems would prefer not to have confirmation hearings.

8. Hi, wicket
I actually don't think Reid will do it, and that really, really disappoints the hell out of me.

9. We'll see how committed old Harry is to opposing this criminal
administration. Either they stop a recess appointment or they allow cheney to put in another puppet and start this shit all over again.

10. Alas, it appears to be a done deal.
It's being reported that SG Paul Clement will be named interim AG. I suspect this was worked out with Reid over the weekend. Just sad.

11. Dems evidently have prepared the locals for this--hope they carry through:
“In view of this work and our view that the process is working well, the issue of recesses should be moot,” Manley said. “If, despite this work, we see that the president still plans to recess controversial nominees, Sen. Reid may need to keep the Senate in pro forma session during the August break.”

Rather than having the Senate adopt a month-long adjournment resolution, Reid could opt for a recess of a few days. Then, Democratic senators — most likely from Maryland, Virginia or another nearby state — would be asked to take turns convening the Senate briefly every few days.

13. If they were planning on
a pro forma session, I think we'd know by now.
