Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Resigns
By Howard Schneider
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 27, 2007; 9:24 AM

Embattled Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales has resigned from his post, according to an administration official, ending a controversial cabinet tenure that included clashes with Congress over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys and the nature of efforts to spy on U.S. citizens.

The official said Gonzales submitted a letter on Friday saying he had decided to step down, but the announcement was withheld until he met with President Bush at the president's Crawford ranch. His resignation will be announced at a press conference scheduled at 10:30.

Gonzales' decision was first reported by the New York Times on its Web site.

Gonzales' resignation marks the loss of another Bush loyalist at a time when his support in public opinion polls has been lagging. Though Bush had voiced continued support for Gonzales, a longtime ally from Texas, the attorney general's support in Congress had withered after a series of run-ins that prompted some lawmakers to allege he had committed perjury.

Attorney General Gonzales resigns
By Jackie Frank and David Morgan 21 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, an official said on Monday, ending a controversial tenure as chief law enforcement officer that blemished the administration of President George W. Bush.

Gonzales was to make a statement at the Justice Department at 10:30 EDT. Bush was also expected to make a statement about Gonzales Monday morning, but would not be announcing a replacement, a senior administration official said.

A senior administration official said U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement will serve as acting Attorney General, amid speculation that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff could be a candidate for a permanent replacement. .....

The embattled US attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, has resigned, becoming the latest in a series of top-level departures from the Bush administration.

The New York Times website said Mr Gonzales had told the president, George Bush, on Friday in a telephone call that he would resign. An official told the Times that an announcement would be made later today.

The 51-year-old Bush loyalist has been under intense pressure to quit in a political row over the sacking of eight federal prosecutors that congressional Democrats have said was politically motivated. Mr Gonzales did not help his case with unconvincing appearances on Capitol Hill. .....

WACO, Tex., Aug. 27 — Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Mr. Gonzales, who had rebuffed calls for his resignation, submitted his to President Bush by telephone on Friday, the official said. His decision was not immediately announced, the official added, until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here.

Mr. Bush has not yet chosen a replacement but will not leave the position open long, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the resignation had not yet been made public.

..........

Earlier this month, at a news conference, Mr. Bush dismissed accusations that Mr. Gonzales had stonewalled or misled a congressional inquiry. “We’re watching a political exercise,” Mr. Bush said. “I mean, this is a man who has testified, he’s sent thousands of papers up there. There’s no proof of wrong.”

Richardson on Anticiapted Resignation of Gonzales

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- Governor Bill Richardson, campaigning today in Iowa, released the following statement regarding the resignation of US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

"The resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is long overdue. The President must nominate an Attorney General who is a lawyer for the American people not a political arm of the White House."

5. Edwards to Gonzales: "See 'ya."
Edwards to Gonzales: "See 'ya."
http://video1.washingtontimes.com/bellantoni/2007/08/edwards_to_gonzales_see_ya.html

Former Sen. John Edwards isn't mincing any words when it comes to resignations in the Bush administration.

Edwards (D-NC) used just three words earlier this month when Karl Rove announced he was leaving: "Goodbye, good riddance."

Today, he added one word when becoming the first Democratic presidential hopeful to issue his statement on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stepping down: "Better late than never."

Gonzales has been a favorite target for Edwards this year. No word yet on what he plans to do with that BIG constitution he was going to deliver to the Justice Department.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned after facing a protracted battle over the botched handling of FBI terror investigations and the firing of U.S. attorneys.

What do you think about Gonzales quitting?

Should Gonzales have quit?

Yes, it was the right thing to do
No, he should have continued his battle
Bush should have replaced him long ago
