Warner Calls Iraq's Maliki Government a Failure

Prominent Republican Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who said Thursday that he wants President Bush to withdraw some U.S. troops from Iraq before year's end, harshly criticized Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki today, calling his beleaguered government a failure.

"The partnership we formed with the Maliki government has failed," said Warner. "We did our job, the troops did their job, but Maliki has let down the American forces, the coalition forces, indeed, the president, in not carrying through with his part of the bargain to take active roles in reconciling the bitterness, the hatred, the mistrust, between the Sunni, the Shia, and the Kurds."

The Armed Services Committee member, just back from a trip to Iraq this month, faulted Maliki for not paving the way towards reconciliation, saying the Shia leaders in the Maliki government have little motivation to cede any of their power to other groups.

"Someone has got to show strong leadership," Warner said, following an appearance this morning on NBC's "Meet the Press."

3. I would love to see the Dems
answer the inevitable questions from Reporters regarding the inevitable, wholly predictable deflection of blame from repukes with the Iraq War by asking them why they're not doing their jobs and asking the President these tough questions. Just ju-jitsu flip it right back in their lazy-ass faces and don't accept blame for Junior's mistakes. And stop being so fucking polite about it!

4. I don't understand the talk about "replacing" Maliki
Isn't he the elected leader? bush could say he removed Saddam because he was a tyrant, and that that justified an illegal invasion. But to remove Maliki would clearly be a crime. If not doing a good job is the rationale, then bush should step down.

5. He is no more "elected" than our other puppet in occupied Afghanistan Hamid Karzai
They would both be dead in minutes if the US wasn't keeping them alive.
