U.S. has second worst newborn death rate in modern world, report says

http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/parenting/05/08/mothers.index/index.html

Research: 2 million babies die in first 24 hours each year worldwide

An estimated 2 million babies die within their first 24 hours each year worldwide and the United States has the second worst newborn mortality rate in the developed world, according to a new report.

American babies are three times more likely to die in their first month as children born in Japan, and newborn mortality is 2.5 times higher in the United States than in Finland, Iceland or Norway, Save the Children researchers found.

Only Latvia, with six deaths per 1,000 live births, has a higher death rate for newborns than the United States, which is tied near the bottom of industrialized nations with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia with five deaths per 1,000 births.

"The United States has more neonatologists and neonatal intensive care beds per person than Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, but its newborn rate is higher than any of those countries," said the annual State of the World's Mothers report.

Charles MacCormack, president and CEO of Save the Children, said the report card "illustrates the direct line between the status of mothers and the status of their children."

"In countries where mothers do well, children do well," he said in a written statement accompanying the report.

I never knew there was an annual State of the World's Mothers report, did you?

I'd say the state of the World's Mothers is grim

all the world's mothers should join hands and kick the bum men out of office. there is work to be done.

1. And the Repubs are all worried about abortion.
Here is the real problem. What heartbreak for the parents. Why don't we have universal pre-natal and post-natal care for children under 5 just for starts?

4. But that's socialism. Besides, it was God's Will that those infants died.
The great news is that babies were allowed to be born. Even though they died post-natally...

6. Stingy Repugs are the real baby killers
since their cruel policies deny women the life saving care that would ensure higher survival rates for them and their babies.

Of course, once a woman has been punished for sex by pregnancy and childbirth, the brat's job is done, so who cares if it dies, right?

They're aided, of course, by stingy Democrats who are terrified somebody is going to call them socialists if they work on alleviating the suffering.

(you bet this stuff makes me angry)

3. Yeah, but... what about the profits?
If we do that, what will we tell those needy executives?

13. Are they really?

That would require prenatal health care, and good nutrition, among other things.

Or did you mean "care", as in, "concern"?

9. While Iraq now has highest infant mortality rate in the world
Even worse than I think Burundi, which was already horrific.

All this wonderful news on the mortality front just makes you proud to be an American today, doesn't it.

10. I wonder what the 'pro-lifers' will say about this
'2 million babies die in first 24 hours each year worldwide'

A horrifying statistic, especially when so many of these deaths are PREVENTABLE.

11. It's almost impossible to get health insurance if you're pregnant.
The insurance companies deem it a "pre-existing condition" and exclude it.

Ain't America wonderful?

12. I wonder if part of the reason
is that babies are born here which would be miscarriages in many parts of the world. Very, very premature babies are probably the vast majority of those infant deaths. In other parts of the world they wouldn't have gotten the chance to take a first breath.
