1. This poll creates a false dichotomy. Why can't you be outraged over both? nt

19. I do not understand the notion that posting the same thing again on a thread is the
indicator of caring.

"The situation with the victims of Katrina is awful."

"Yup."

"Sure is."

"K&R!"

"It is quite terrible!"

It is my experience that people post most on threads with a fresh subject matter on which there is significant disagreement.

34. What a terrible way to trivialize what Katrina victims go through.
It is terrible, and there are still "fresh" stories about new aspects of the storm. Just because some DUers have a fleeting attention span doesn't make the story any less important or relevant.

35. No one but you said it was less important or relevant.
Not posting doesn't mean anyone thinks it's either of those things.

2. I remember the Katina threads from two years ago
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 01:24 PM by YOY
I got my head bitten off when I told some folks to "keep calm" unless they could do something for the victims.

People were out in droves and emotions were INCREDIBLY charged. It was not a happy couple of days and even weeks/months afterwards.

Vicks gets a few quips from most folks and that's about it. I don't quite agree with the comparison.

I am outraged by both....
I work towards animal welfare in my spare time and I plan to travel to NOLA to volunteer on the first vacation I've taken in three years, come November.

I can also walk and chew gum at the same time....I'm a Democrat and a Progressive, after all...

5. Send me a PM before you head south...
Maybe I can meet you at Louis Armstrong for a cup of coffee.

My point is this: threads on Katrina sink like stones these days--people just don't seem to be too interested in it.

Thank you for spending your vacation with people who need you.

7. I'd love to... my sister and I are trying to coordinate schedules...
and to identify the right group to work with.... Seems our first pick, Habitat for Humanity is not taking volunteers right now? (something I find unfathomable and I have our own chapter checking on it).

If you have alternate suggestions, let me know. :toast:

6. If you don't have money to donate or the means to volunteer,
......what else can you do but work to make sure Dems get elected so we can have a government that WORKS? The situation is so FUBAR that nothing short of a strong federal mandate will fix it. We KNOW that won't happen with a rethug at the helm.

15. How does that equate to "not being outraged about the dogs?"
Stories about animal cruelty typically get among the most impassioned public feedback to news and law enforcement, second only perhaps, to those about severe child abuse or abduction. The celebrity factor is not the issue. Most people give a very strong "damn" about those who are dependent upon us for their safety and welfare. Children and animals ....

There's a similar problem with too many polls. After a while, they turn to shit.

so you're not really used to them, huh?

The only Katrina victim who posted in this thread recommended it. I'll take his opinion over that of a person with seeyou stockholm syndrome.

20. It's not a requirement.
But here we are on the second anniversary, and it seems like the topic has become boring to DUers. It's not as salacious as the Vick story.

Just sad to me when animal cruelty receives so much attention, and ongoing human suffering bores people (thus, the topics sink to page six).

(And this was a copycat of another ridiculous thread, comparing DUers' outrage/indifference about dogs/chicken nuggets--a copycat that I was certain would be locked immediately. Go figure.)

22. Hi Maddy. I care a lot about the Katrina victims.
My outrage at how badly they have been treated, about the super-slow response (to this DAY) continues unabated.

I also care about the dogs that Michael Vick tortured and killed.

In fact, there is something of a parallel here, in that both the Katrina victims and those poor dogs are seen in the same way by the powerful: disposable beings.

It is disgusting, plain and simple.

28. Remember people Katrina had it all. Human death, degradation suffering and animal cruelty
It was the whole enchilada and it's not something that we should let fall through the memory hole. EVER! Not to mention the fact that there are still some 43K families living in FEMA trailers and mobile homes TWO years later.

Just so people know why I mentioned animal cruelty.

Lawsuit: Katrina Pets Executed
Investigations, Two criminal indictments and a Lawsuit Put the Heat on St. Bernard Parish's Sherrif's Offices.

For nearly two years, pet owners from the low-lying Louisiana parish of St. Bernard have accused sheriff's deputies of having wantonly killed dozens of dogs they forced evacuees to leave behind during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, without regard to the dogs' size or the potential threat they might pose.

One owner said her family was forced at gunpoint to leave its dog behind. Another owner said residents became frantic when, they said, they overheard one deputy claim that "once everybody's gone, we're going to have target practice tonight." They claim in court papers that deputies were under orders to shoot every dog they found.

Two deputies have already been indicted by a grand jury in New Orleans on charges of felony, aggravated cruelty to animals. The Louisiana attorney general's office is investigating and this morning lawyers for a group of owners will file a comprehensive complaint in federal court in Louisiana seeking class action status for their clients.

http://www.petjustice.org/media.html

FYI the trial of the two people charged was postponed until November of 2007.
