Pelosi: ‘Resignation of Attorney General Gonzales Is Long Overdue’
Pelosi: ‘Resignation of Attorney General Gonzales Is Long Overdue’

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales:

“The resignation of Attorney General Gonzales is long overdue. The rampant politicization of federal law enforcement that occurred under his tenure seriously eroded public confidence in our justice system.

“The President must now restore credibility to the office of the Attorney General. Given the serious loss of public trust and the disarray at the Department of Justice, the American people must have absolute confidence in the integrity of the next Attorney General as the nation's chief law enforcement officer and as defender of our constitution independent of political influence. The President’s nominee must have the character and stature to command that confidence.

“The nominee must also pledge to cooperate with ongoing congressional oversight into the conduct of the White House in the politicization of federal law enforcement. Hearings on the nominee will provide Congress with another opportunity to examine the new, flawed FISA law and will aid in our efforts to improve it.”

3. Good thing you stood around waiting for it to happen, Nance
Rather than, oh say...doing your constitutional duty. Much better to just wait until someone else does something.

7. You seriously think Rove and Gonzo would have resigned if Republicans controlled Congress?
I don't think it's fair to say Nancy did nothing.

8. Allowing them to resign is the equivalent of doing nothing
Just watch. Gonzo will no longer be investigated, nor will he ever be called to account for his misconduct.

5. " The nominee must also pledge"
yeah, and Lucy's not gonna yank the ball away from Charlie Brown next time either... But at least if, on the SLIGHT chance that the next Bush nominee for (fill in the blank here) turns out to thumb their nose at the "pledges" they make , the congressional Dems can express how surprised they are, and patiently wait for that person to decide to resign.

12. step aside OR step up...
Over and over and over, I keep trying to comprehend----what the HELL are they all afraid of...Looked you up to see if you had a journal, based on your DU name. I'm a musician who has probably played blues more than anything else (and grew up , sort of, in Chicago), even though you can see that I'm a Springsteen and Marley fan too. Anyway, read your only entry (that was visible anyway) and I hope you're doing better (it was from a year ago). Hard to not let it all get you down, I'm prone to that hopeless feeling too, but then I remember they WANT us to give up and let them run roughshod over everything that was decent about America, and I find another tiny bit of fight still left in me, just to not give the bastards the satisfaction of defeating me.

11. Pelosi should resign as Speaker of the House.
Is that a mean thing to post?
