"Found Jesus"...Gosh, that seems SO sincere!!
Yep, I found that moving statement from Vick to be completely sincere and not one bit self-serving.

Yeah, right.

And since when is torturing and killing animals just a lapse of judgement?? Doesn't that seem more like the earmark of a personality disorder?

3. This must be a different Jesus from the one I know
The Jesus I know said that God knows (and cares) when a sparrow falls from the sky. The Jesus I know said that a righteous person who had 100 sheep, if one of those sheep fell down a well, would leave the 99 to save the one in the well. The Jesus I know got pissed off about animal sacrifice.

So, I have no idea who this new friend of Michael "the animal torturer" Vick might be.

33. Little known historical fact: one Emperor attempted a Pagan revival.

Most people know that Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. But it is seldom mentioned that a later Emperor tried to restore Paganism. After decades without animal sacrifice, the people were disgusted by these Pagan rituals. When the rape gangs came out to celebrate the Saturnalia, the people took up arms, the Emperor was deposed and a lot of Pagans were murdered in retaliation.

Just a lot of talk about how superior we all are to Michael Vick, the only person in America who ever did a horrible thing apparently. I'm not sure why being an animal lover gives one license to become a fascist when it comes to punishing this guy, but that seems to be the just of it.

31. I am more concerned with us than with him.
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 03:47 PM by DefenseLawyer
I believe in punishment, but I also believe in forgiveness and rehabilitation. I think there is too much of an "us vs. them" mentality when it comes to criminal justice in this country. The idea that there are "good people" like us who have one set of rules and then "bad people" who, well fuck them, they are bad people, so we can be as hateful and vile to them as possible and still feel good about what "good people" we are. Once we put someone in the bad category he can "burn in hell" or "rot in jail" or get sodomized in jail or just die. Criminal behavior becomes an socially acceptable reason to hate. Well where I live there is no us and them, just us. The almost gleeful viciousness to which this guy is the subject of is ugly. I wouldn't wish it upon my brother, should he happen to commit an equally horrible act. I am guessing you wouldn't either. I have no problem with people being angry and disappointed at Michael Vick, but the level of hatred doesn't make for a healthy society. Seeing "good people" describe the ways they would torture Michael Vick if they could doesn't make me sleep any better at night.

35. "Lynch" & "fascist" are hot button words. We just found out the depth of his crime.
I have never called for him to burn in hell/be sodomized, of course, but it will take more than an "I found Jesus!!" for me to consider his debt to society as paid.

38. I don't hate Michael Vick. I don't KNOW Michael Vick.
I would have to know him to hate him. I don't think he should 'burn in hell' or 'rot in jail'. And I REALLY don't think he deserves to be sodomized in jail. God, who DOES think stuff like that? I think he should stand up and take his lumps like a big boy. I think he should have done it a long time ago. I don't think he (or anybody) should think that 'finding Jesus' after spending eight months of completely denying any need to do so and AFTER the shit has hit the fan should mitigate their treatment.

Isn't there some middle ground between observing that I think that Vick is self-serving by announcing that he has found Jesus at this point and thinking he deserves to be sodomized in jail? Cause, you know, I think there is. Finding Michael Vick's actions distasteful in the extreme does not automatically mean that someone thinks he deserves the things you mentioned or that they hate him.

30. "Fascist"?
Huh? How is it 'fascist' to find dog fighting repulsive? And honestly, how much of an animal lover do you have to be to do the same?

You know what I am sick of? Apologists. Some things really ARE just wrong. No matter who does them. No matter what their 'cultural influences' are. Is that a 'righteous' thing to say? Well, I guess I am righteous then.

41. One thing we have seen
from fascists is that for those they have deemed unacceptable, no level of punishment is too great, no standard rules apply. I use that word because I have seen too many good people who, once they have labeled Vick as unacceptable, they have lost all manner of restraint. All bets are off. Fuck him, he should be tortured, he should be brutalized, he should get a life sentence. In no way am I saying people shouldn't be repulse by dog fighting. That is a given. I just don't think being an animal lover means you can suddenly want to execute or torture another person and be justified.

But, by all means, if you are getting worn out by the Vick comments, avoid those threads.

47. My Outrage is MORE than sincere
Believe me, as the owner of cats and dogs, I love them much more than I do people.

...and I find it extremely offensive that you imply our outrage is not sincere. MOST of us have animals. How you could NOT be outraged at such acts of inhumanity, cruelty beyond the telling of it, sociopathy and sadism? It only speaks about YOU, not us.

...and if my dog ran in front of a car at the same time YOU did and I could only save one of you...it would be my dog. Of course, it would be my animals over all people, except my girlfriend in which case I would just go insane on the spot.

You can be nonchalant about sadism and pretend others of us are pretending but if you knew anything at all about psychology you would know our outrage is sincere. Did you know most tv and movie writers will have things happen to people over animals because of all the hate mail they get when something happens to an animal. What about "defenseless" "helpless" "unable to defend oneself" "pain" and "torture" don't you get?

I would save the kids and the husband first. In fact, in case of a fire where total strangers and THEIR cats and dogs were involved, I would save the people first.

That doesn't mean that people have the right to treat animals with anything less than respect. I just wanted to point out that you don't have to value animals over people to find what Vick did disgusting.
