Were it not for his pathetic appearances before Congress over the firing of US Attorneys, Alberto Gonzales would still be Attorney General of the United States. He would be happily presiding over what would become the Press Office of the Republican Party, churning out indictments of every leading Democrat in the country, refusing to enforce the laws and treaties of the US, and bringing civil rights back to the 1940's. Gonzales' role was the enforcer of Karl Rove's dirty vision of America, and the blind eye to the paranoic machinations of Dick Cheney.

Gonzales' Congressional testimony appearances resulted from the work of a blogger, Joshua Micah Marshall, and his small staff at TPM Memo and TPM Muckraker (and I would add more to that list but TPM has been on top, kpete)

from Robert Niles at the Online Journalism Review:
http://www.ojr.org/ojr/stories/070320niles/

TPM Media reporters gathered information by working phones, swapping e-mails and searching documents as well as following reporting from San Diego's Union-Tribune and North County Times, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and McClatchy's Washington bureau covering the firings of respected local U.S. Attorneys and their replacement with Bush administration loyalists.

Joshua Marshall's work crystalizes what blogging is about:

6. SO, why didn't TPM make the CREW connection with DEEP MODEM?
There are about FIFTY "Anonymous" lawyer posts at CREW, some are word for word.

God Bless you, Josh!

Thank you for doggedly practicing the lost art of "journalism". You are the future of freedom and checks and balances. The MSM stenographers are dinosaurs doomed to extinction.

Our formally robust and working Consittution and your efforts could give us the "breathing room" to restore health and vigor to the Constitution that has served us well since 1776. (Or 1781 or what ever?)

Thanks again!

the guy who took out Trent Lott? According to Krugman, yes.

http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2002/12/56978

'"Joshua Marshall, whose talkingpointsmemo.com is must reading for the politically curious, (is) more than anyone else, responsible for making Trent Lott's offensive remarks the issue they deserve to be," noted Paul Krugman in his New York Times column.'

15. Marshall's www.talkingpointsmemo.com Is Excellent.
Yes, we can thank Josh Marshall's "Talking Points Memo" website for bringing down Attorney General Alberto Gonzales! This just shows what a small group of dedicated investigative journalists can accomplish. It also points up how poorly how national media serves our country.

The deputy attorney general firing story is only one of many fine investigative pieces that Talking Points Memo has generated. They have my thanks.
