Iglesias: Rove, Gonzales exits 'absolutely linked'
Fired attorney: Rove, Gonzales resignations 'absolutely linked' David Edwards and Nick Juliano
Published: Monday August 27, 2007

During an appearance on CNN, former US Attorney David Iglesias said Gonzales's resignation is "absolutely linked with Karl Rove leaving two weeks ago," and speculated the two resigned "for the same reason": Congressional investigators closing in on their suspected roles in the attorney-firing scandal.

"This is what happens when there is not check and balance" under a Republican-controlled Congress and White House "and all of a sudden you have a new sheriff in town - so to speak - that wants answers to hard questions."

Due to obstruction by Gonzales and other Bush officials, Iglesias added, the extent of the White House's attempt to have politically inconvenient prosecutors fired remains unknown. "We still don't know who put our names on that list," he said. The former US Attorney for New Mexico contends that he was fired after two Congressional Republicans - Sen. Pete Dominici and Rep. Heather Wilson - urged him to speed indictments of a Democratic state senator before the election.

"What triggered this (resignation) was Attorney General Alberto Gonzales going in front of the US Senate and not being fully candid, telling half truths (and) having very convenient memory lapses," Iglesias said Monday. "Had he shot straight with the American people and shot straight with the Senate, perhaps a lot of this would've been mitigated."

6. Wishful thinking on his part, I think.
I understand why he wants these people to pay but, no idea if they ever will.

8. I think it's not revenge, he just understands clearly the relationships.
Remember, one of Iglesias's peers was shoved aside for an aide of Rove's.

10. I meant the 'because investigators are closing in' part.
There's definitely all sorts of links, no question.

3. I like Iglesias and
his integrity, but he better think about changing parties cause they (RePukes) will destroy what is left of his career talking like that. He is setting himself up for a hell of a Swift-boating, IMO.

11. as I understand it
there is no criminal penalty for violating the Hatch Act. Only professional reprimands.

http://www.osc.gov/ha_fed.htm#penalties

Penalties for Violating the Hatch Act

An employee who violates the Hatch Act shall be removed from their position, and funds appropriated for the position from which removed thereafter may not be used to pay the employee or individual. However, if the Merit Systems Protection Board finds by unanimous vote that the violation does not warrant removal, a penalty of not less than 30 days' suspension without pay shall be imposed by direction of the Board.

12. I'm thinking it's related to the voter caging...
missing e-mails some of which Greg Palast managed to get hold of, gutted civil rights division, Rove's protege in Arkansas resigned after Palast turned the lists over to John Conyers...

Could be any of the corruption scandals (Carol Lamb), but I'm still thinking it's the voter caging. I really think that corruption catches up at some point, and unfortunately, most Americans are tired of it all by the time that it is proven, but stripping people for no damned good reason of the right to vote, will get a lot of Americans scratching their heads and then screaming, wait a minute!

Then, like Chertoff, it could just be gas.

If Gonzales had come clean, there would be a dozen grand juries convened and impeachment proceedings going full steam against Bush, Cheney and Jeebus only knows who else.

Oh, yeah, and Gonzales would disappear and his body never be found.

15. It's not naivete, it's spin - it's not as bad as it looks b/c Gonzales. . .
We'll have lots of BushCo apologists using that line for a long time.

23. On second thought, it was probably wishful thinking on his part
He's a life long republican.

I'm sure it's hard for him to admit, even to himself, how evil and corrupt this gang is.

18. I think he was applying the theory of
"ask for their forgiveness, and they will forgive you and move on", much like the nation did with Clinton when he admitted his dalliance with Monica. We still loved Bill, he asked for forgiveness and we gave it to him, as a nation. They fucking hate that fact more than anything else.

Anyway, that's how I read that statement.

20. What ol' Bill did with Monica was not illegal and certainly none of our business...
And I quit watching MSM when they refused to quit trying to cram it down my throat every night at dinner time for months on end.

On the other hand, what this administration has done reeks with criminality, corruption, subversion and treason. HUGE difference between that and a BJ... except to a Rethug, I guess.

and the attorney that made these statements IS a repug. I just think that is what he was implying with that last quoted bit above about how it could have been different if they had just come clean.

They tried to convince Nixon to do that too. He refused and resigned instead.

what this means for the investigations... does gonzo's resignation mean game over?

what do you think? is it game over for attorney firing hearings/investigations? were rove/gonzo resignations part of a deal - resignations in exchange for shutting down investigations? ( I know nothing has been officially said about ending the investigations....yet.....)
