Federal Inspectors Find Armed Guard Asleep At NY Nuke Plant
Armed Guard Found Asleep at Nuke Plant

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A federal inspector found an armed guard asleep at a gate inside the Indian Point nuclear power plants but officials said Monday there was no security breach.

The inspector spent two minutes trying to rouse the unnamed guard Sunday afternoon before the guard "stood up and opened his eyes," said Neil Sheehan, spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The five-year veteran was alone on the second of three security rings around the two plants in Buchanan, about 35 miles north of New York City, Sheehan said.

He said other security measures at the gate remained in operation during the guard's nap and tapes showed there was no breach, "but that doesn't make it any less serious."

- I'm not sure which is worse, an armed man asleep at a nuke plant where terrorists can sneak past him, or an armed man with insomnia, all nervous and fidgety and ready to shoot the first thing that moves.

Well at least he some rest. That's the important thing......

2. No. This was a Bush low-wage worker.....
...who was probably on his 2nd or 3rd job. If it had been a Bush appointee, he would have been caught stealing the nuke plant.

3. Indian Point is down the road from me more or less, and the security there is
practically non-existent. Bobby Kennedy Jr.'s sister, Rory made a documentary about it and it aired on HBO. It's called "Indian Point" and it shows just how vulnerable it is.

On the way down to NYC on 9/11, the two planes from Boston flew over the Nuke plant. If they really wanted to hurt us, that could have been the target. On the other hand, if it was, I would have been toast for the last 5 plus years.

4. I know how you feel...
...because I live in TN and they've had two releases of radioactive water that went unreported until recently, for "national security" reasons.

And then there's Brown's Ferry where they've had to shut down the reactor because...get this, the water to cool the fuel rods has been too hot with the extreme temperatures we've been having. Several states have had temps above 100+ for 10 or more days running breaking all kinds of records. And of course the hotter it gets, the more people turn down the temp on air conditioners, increasing demand on the grid. The TVA says they'll increase rates this fall to make up for the electricity they had to buy when they took the reactor off-line.

I envision a day when we'll all be glowing, and it won't be from the heat....

8. If you get a chance to see "Indian Point "and they discuss this particular plant,
you wouldn't feel none to safe either.

As an aside, days after 9/11 my sons' school requested permission to give out sodium iodate tablets in the case of emergency.
