What good will come from the Gonzales resignation? |
|
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 09:27 AM by spotbird
Clement could hang on for a year. Shoot, they may even find a way to keep him for the rest of Bush's term. Clement is cut from the same cloth. He believes in the superiority of ideology to the constitution. Clement is much smarter than his predecessor, but that only makes him more dangerous. It is impossible that he'll cause generalized correction of the corruption of DOJ, and will likely continue the policies without any change.
In the remote possibility the administration offers a nominee for confirmation, the nominee will be one of the same as well, but with a honeymoon. Bush will not nominate someone qualified, impartial and with the integrity to run the department honestly, much less answer subpoenas. So, how will Gonzo's leaving help?
An impeachment would have caused scrutiny of the DoJ for the rest of Bush's term, even though it would have failed. It is technically still possible to impeach Gonzo, if he is convicted he could never serve in the Federal government again. That move would also give congress superior investigative powers, but they wouldn't dare do it.
The resignation seems like a victory to BushCo, in every respect.

Some people are never f-g happy. This is the kind of thing that makes me completely disgusted with DU and other discussion sites often. A victory for BushCo in every respect? What are you people smoking? Gonzo got forced out basically in disgrace. He didn't exactly go willingly or honorably despite what spin the right wing puts on it. So the good that comes out of it is that there is one particular evil-doer who is no longer in a position of power.
Sure the hydra will regrow another head, but that's a different issue.

In and of itself, that he's been forced out, is a good thing. And the answer to the OP's question is: We don't know.
And boy do I understand and share your frustration with the screechy, whiny shit.

9. I accept you think we should not reflect |

when we're told to celebrate. I'm unable to do that, so, for me some specifics would make the celebration more festive.
My blind faith in intuitions has been strained over the past few years, forgive me. I do admire your ability to stay optimistic.

8. OK, the good is the personal |
|
satisfaction that comes from Gonzo leaving in disgrace. That's something.
In a broader context, will DOJ now respond to congress's subpoenas? Will the hacks hired into the civil service be fired? Will those who abuse the justice process for political gain be prosecuted? Will the scope of the scandal be known?
