Pretend you're Joe Lieberman |
|
yeah, yeah, it's a horrifying thought. Just pretend. Anyway, prez bush calls you up and asks you to become his AG. So you go hmmm, on one hand I've got more than 5 years left as a powerful Senator to continue dicking around the citizens of CT and the US, on the other hand, there's a 15 month position in a lame duck admin, being investigated in dozens of Committees.
Which would you choose?
This is one rumor that's absurd. I'm surprised Tom's giving it the time of day.

1. If I were pretending to be Joe, I'd take the AG offer. |
|
Because if I were pretending to be Joe I'd have to pretend to be stupid.

I think this is a really dangerous moment. bushco is increasingly desperate to do something- anything -to, as they see it, salvage their legacy. Add that to the fact that bushco can't stand to back down on anything, that bad things just keep rolling in for the admin, and as Nir Rosen said, the conviction that if he doesn't "step up to the plate", no subsequent admin will, and yeah, I think it's not only possible, it's probable.

You used to be one of the people shot that idea out of the water. If you're convinced (as I am as well), then something's up.
I'm going to post a quick poll.

7. Lieberman would have more power being the 51st senator than as AG |
|
Without 51, Reid loses control of the Senate. If Reid doesn't want to listen to me, I could keep the Senate locked up in protocol. Then, I can lay down the plot to make myself emperor.

Lieberman knows that this is his last hurrah, there is no way the people of Connecticutt will return him to office after his duplicitous conduct. He will take his five years and then change party affiliation. The power-hungry little geek would never accept a 15 month position with this sinking ship of an administration.

9. Lieberman can be far more disruptive and get much more attention in his current role. |
|
No doubt, in 18 months, Joe's Vulcan death grip on the Senate's scrotum will be gone, but he'll still be Senator.

He might very well prefer to take the promotion and retire as Attorney General. Go out on top, so to speak.

People are fleeing from the Bush Administration. First Snowjob, then Rove, now Gonzo, along with a whole bunch more White House staffers. The Bush administration is falling apart right now.
OTOH, as Senator, Joe would retain his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, he would retain that tiebreaker vote as neither the Dems or the GOP have a majority, so he can caucus with the Dems, periodically threaten to defect to the GOP if the Dems don't kiss his ass and lick his boots enough, while flirting with the GOP enough to get them to lick his boots too.
He's in the catbird seat right now.
On the other hand, if Joe does accept the AG position, chances are he knows something we don't, say about an imminent declaration of martial law, and disbanding of Congress, perhaps?
If he does accept a position in Bush's Cabinet, get your guns...

There was a signed accord prior to the 111st Session that the Dems will retain the majority, no matter who flips.
So, Joe's stupid threats are moot.
