Why did Cheney want Rove and Gonzo gone?
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 12:16 PM by smoogatz
I've been trying to figure out the real reasons for their departure, and I don't think it has anything to do with the various scandals or congressional investigations currently churning glacially into view. There's really nothing to prevent Bush from continuing to rope-a-dope congress until the end of his term: claim executive privilege, fight it out in the courts, hand out a pardon here and there as required. There's certainly no evidence that the current congress has the will or the inclination to do anything about Rove's and Gonzales' malfeasance, much less Bush's and Cheney's. That means that the decision to toss Rove and Gonzo was internal—it came from within the White House rather than being enforced from the outside. Why? Who's really calling the shots, and what would their agenda be regarding Bush's most trusted advisers/aides? My guess is that once again, Cheney's working the levers. Rove and Gonzo were Bush's boys, not his; they protected Bush and his interests against all comers--not just those on the outside, but those within the administration who would seek to infringe on Bush's turf as President. I think this is the final stage of the Cheney power grab; whatever he had on Rove and Gonzo was potent enough to drive them out of the WH (and away from Bush's side) against Bush's wishes (although it's possible Bush was persuaded that it was time for Rove and Gonzo to go). Now they're gone, and Bush has no idea what's going on; no idea what to do politically, or what his legal prerogatives are as President, no way to deflect or control Shotgun Dick. That means the shit is about to get seriously deep. We just went from dumb and dumber to batshit crazy. Watch out Iran, and God help the rest of us.

2. Yep. This is Cheney's idea
So far I've only come up with two possible reasons

One: Rove/Gonzales are not the best possible support staff to bolster Cheney's fervent desire to invade Iran.

Two: There is something really big coming out relating to the NSA spying program and there needs to be a hole in the admin of the Just Us department providing a bumper between the program and Cheney/Bush.

but whatever it is, I am sure it is Cheney's boot print which is on the behinds of Rove and Gonzales.

3. Rove and Gonzo were thrown under the bus, alright.
Now, Cheney's calling all the shots in the administration. Probably to deflect some of the heat away from him and Bush, and also to distract the public from his preparation for war with Iran, and maybe even a declaration of martial law.

4. As cover
As Gonzo and Rove head to the exit, they'll be saddled with ALL of the administration's malfeasance.
