he's already tried to deny, and no one has bought it. When you offer that excuse, you give it time to sink in. He's getting pressure from his state, from his party, from his supporters. He doesn't belong to a group that will tell him it's okay, that will vow to support him. If he goes it, he goes it alone. I think he's done. He'd have waited longer to make up a story.

Sad. Not that another Republican is falling, but that his fall will reinforce the bigotry of the homophobes.

Although, just as a fantasy scenario, I'd love to see him announce that he is gay, he is tired or pretending there is anything wrong with that, and he is remaining in the Senate, as a Republican, to fight negative stereotypes of homosexuality.
