British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has refused to set a deadline to pull his country's 5,500 troops out of Iraq.

Mr Brown rejected calls to set an exit timetable, saying British troops would stay in the war-torn country as long as necessary.

The prime minister's plans were revealed in a letter he wrote to Liberal Democrats Leader Sir Menzies Campbell, who has made repeated calls for Mr Brown to reappraise his government's Iraq strategy because of the "unacceptable" escalation of casualties.

Since becoming prime minister two months ago, Mr Brown has faced similar calls to his Australian counterpart John Howard about exactly how long allied troops will remain in Iraq.
