Woman Tried To Flush Newborn; Baby Expected to Survive
Police: Woman Tried To Flush Newborn
Baby Expected To Survive

POSTED: 1:25 pm CDT August 28, 2007

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City police are investigating a 20-year-old woman who allegedly tried to flush her newborn son down the toilet at a McDonald's restaurant.

Both the baby and the mother, a Kansas City resident who works at the McDonald's, are at the hospital being treated after the Monday afternoon incident. Police said the child is expected to survive.

"Fortunately, the baby's fine," Capt. Rich Lockhart said Tuesday. "The baby's at the hospital getting treatment. The mother's at the hospital getting treatment. We're investigating it."

No charges had been filed as of late Tuesday morning. Lockhart said police have interviewed workers at the McDonald's and planned to talk to the mother once she's able to speak to them.

4. I hope she gets some help
I can only imagine what kind of social and economic problems this woman must be facing to have to resort to something like this. Welcome to the land of the uncaring government.

8. Uncaring society in general
Why on earth didn't she have an abortion? Is Kansas City that far right? I don't think so!

Pretty sure she has some severe mental issues.

9. You're pretty sure? From reading one small news report?
Wow - you must have magic powers.

By the way, there are many states that have a grand total on ONE abortion clinic for the entire state.

Do you think it's easy for women to get abortions here in the US?

I would figure there would have to be at least one in a major urban center. Kansas City has it's share of open-minded folks. I've met quite a few KC liberals and if there is no clinic anywhere in KC I would be extremely surprised. Actuallly after a quick Google:

*Aid For Women - www.aidforwomen.com
720 Central Ave, Kansas City, KS - (913) 321-3350
Directions and more »

*Abortion Access For Women - maps.google.com
720 Central Ave, Kansas City, KS - (913) 621-0808
Directions and more »

*Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri - www.comprehensivehealth.org
4401 W 109th St, Overland Park, KS - (913) 345-1400
Directions and more »

I've got 179 more on the search. (On edit: it appears that only the first 20 or so are actual clinics, but the point remains.) I am sure there are plenty in both the KS and MO sides of the city. The "magical powers" comment was not needed. Please be polite.

Now rural MO or KS,I'd be shocked to see one. Especially in fundie country.

And I've honestly yet to live in an area without one. I've lived in several states, granted mostly urban areas. Hell, even in my small Ohio college town there was one.

I realize that abortion is in danger, but they haven't won yet (or will win). As a man who has had to escourt a female friend to a clinic once after her sh*theel of a boyfriend dropped her like a bad habit when he found she was pregant, I do not like to be attacked as anti-choice.

15. Ok sorry about that - but still, you don't know this woman's circumstances
You can't know her family background or her economic status or anything about her in order to determine that she has mental issues.

16. This is true
But I'd be interested in if this is a problem of her/the individual or something that takes on a much larger scope.

It's all speculation until more information is given.

18. My Shrink Would Claim That It IS Prima Facia
The act itself proves the mental illness. Or as she always tells my lover when I've gone out of control. "Mental illness comes with a behavior." I do think the act itself proves something about her mental state.

12. It didnt' mention who the father was
I always wonder how women can't know they're pregnant at that stage of pregnancy, but I've heard of it happening before.

But I wonder whether she lived with her parents, how her parents feel about sex before marriage, how her parents feel about abortion, etc.

20. you bet wrong
I'm not male and I have been pregnant and desperate. I didn't try to murder a child born alive so fuck your hypothesis. Something made her do this and it was her. What should be explored is why you want to excuse this shit.

24. As far as I can tell, no one is trying to "excuse this shit."
What some people have done is try to find an explanation for why this mother behaved as she did. In doing so, they have suggested that perhaps she was, or believed she was, in a desperate situation, that she might have been in an abusive or oppressive relationship. The world is, of course, a sadder place that she didn't have the resources -- emotional, social, financial, etc. -- to deal with her desperation as rationally as some of us. Perhaps she should be exterminated for her lack of superior judgment? Oh, and why not eliminate her offspring as well, since we don't want those genes to survive?

Now, some people may not agree with my distinction, but I consider an "excuse" as something that negates the consequences of the action. Like being late to school: If you have an "excuse," like the school bus was late due to a flat tire en route, you don't get counted tardy. But if you just overslept and missed the bus, that's an "explanation" and you're still marked tardy.

Excusing without understanding is, imho, as reprehensible as condemning without knowing the facts.

But of course,
I'm just

21. Many abusers can say the same things.
Most child sex offenders, to pick just one example, had the same thing happen to them as children. There's often a psychology involved there as well. Am I supposed to make excuses for something like that and have compassion without condemning the abuse?
There's hardly a crime for which you can't make the argument you just wrote.

23. It's True
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 05:04 PM by Madspirit
If you want to punish the sex offender rather than have compassion and help them, you might as well go into a room with ten tiny children who have been taken from homes where abuse has happened and kill 7 of them. ...because that is the number that will likely grow up to abuse, the estimates are somewhere between 4 and 7 of them. It really is a cycle. ...but hey, if pound of flesh is your cup of tea, go for it...but NOTHING will EVER change.

19. An attempt at a post-birth abortion. So sad.
But to many right-wingers sex education and access to birth control is evil.

26. That is so sad.
This administration has sought to make birth control obsolete, or at least discussion of it. And this is precisely what happens when that kind of ignorance prevails.

Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 06:06 PM by tammywammy
That's what makes this story even sadder. The mother could have given the baby to a hospital, police officer or EMT and there would be no repercussions. Now, she may face attempted murder charges.
