Colin Powell coming to OU Sept. 12

Colin L. Powell, U.S. Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, will have a conversation with University of Oklahoma students on “The Challenges Facing America” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall in Catlett Music Center, 500 W. Boyd St. Additionally, a President’s Associates reception, dialogue and dinner featuring OU President David L. Boren and General Powell is scheduled that evening.

“We’re honored to welcome General Powell to our campus. He is admired not only as a public servant but also because of his work as a civic volunteer in reaching out to help others. His wide personal experience at the highest levels of our government give him a unique perspective about the greatest challenges which our country faces in the years ahead,” said OU President David L. Boren.

Upon becoming confirmed as the 65th Secretary of State on Jan. 20, 2001, Powell stated that his guiding principle of U.S. foreign policy during his tenure was that “America stands ready to help any country that wishes to join the democratic world.”

Before becoming Secretary of State, Powell served as a key aide to the Secretary of Defense and as a National Security Adviser and also served 35 years in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of four-star general and served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993, he oversaw 27 crises, including the Panama intervention and Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf War.

Colin Powell to visit Mount Greenwood

Tickets are on sale now to see General Colin L. Powell(Ret.) as the second speaker in the SXU Voices & Visions Speaker Series at Saint Xavier University.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Shannon Center on SXU's campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

Prior to Powell’s lecture, titled “Diplomacy: Persuasion, Trust & Values,” SXU President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., will present him with a Doctor of Public Service, honoris causa, in recognition of his long and distinguished career of public service.

Earlier in the day, Powell is scheduled to conduct a special classroom discussion with Saint Xavier students.

Powell became the 65th Secretary of State January 20, 2001, serving under President George W. Bush. He previously served as a key aide to the secretary of defense and as national security advisor to President Ronald Reagan.

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - Retired Lt. Gen. Robert Arter, chairman of the board of trustees of the Command and General Staff College Foundation announced the creation of an academic chair and lecture series at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in the name of retired general and former U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell. Arter made the announcement during a reception at the college Aug. 12.

"General Powell has an extraordinary and indelible service record to the nation," Arter said, "and the CGSC Foundation is extremely proud to have the opportunity to establish these programs at the college in his name."

Details are still being determined, but according to Arter and Bob Ulin, the CGSC Foundation chief executive officer, Powell has agreed to allow the foundation to establish an endowment to fund an academic chair in his name as well as establish a Colin L. Powell Lecture Series. The intent is to provide a forum for the discussion of national security issues by prominent national and international leaders for the benefit of the military students at the college. Business and community leaders from around the nation will also be invited to participate.

During the reception hosted by the foundation, Arter and Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, commander of the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, unveiled a bronze plaque commemorating the foundation's incorporating members. After the unveiling, Arter reaffirmed his and every foundation trustee's unflagging support for the college.
