Conyers Now Says Impeachment is NOT Off His Table
Submitted by davidswanson on Wed, 2007-08-29 12:49. Congress | Impeachment
By Ann Wright, Colonel, US Army Reserves (retired)

US Congressman John Conyers said in Pontiac, Michigan, on August 28, 2007 that, while Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi may have impeachment off her table, he has NOT put impeachment off HIS table!

At a gathering of over 500 citizens of the Detroit and Pontiac, Michigan area gathered to “Take a Stand” against the war on Iraq sponsored by Iraq Summer, Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said that citizens must bring to an end “sad and tragic war.”

Conyers said that citizens must reject the “imperial” government of the Bush administration. Conyers listed torture, Geneva Convention violations, abuse of national security letters, and voters’ rights violations as parts of the “imperial system,” and that members of the administration have “inherent contempt” for the Congress. Conyers said he has no reticence or reluctance to “use the tool of impeachment,” when he “feels it is appropriate.”

1. Conyers isn't about to impeach anybody...
unless he thinks he has an airtight case going in. I read this comment as indicating that he thinks maybe he could pull it off, but he isn't quite sure yet.

8. Yes and Conyers should break the leash of Madame Squeaker!
He is a coward to be led around by "that woman!"

He will say one thing back home and another back in Washington where it counts.

11. I don't think it's particularly Nancy either and believe me,
I've been frustrated as hell by my rep.

This seems to me to be about Hillary Clinton and about 2008. The party has been out of power for a long time. The backroom leadership sees an opportunity in 2008 that they don't want to risk and, for their purposes, they may be right.

I still try to work for impeachment every day in some way.

16. I know you do work for impeachment and I appreciate it! Squeaker is
a major cog in the wheel that keeps * in power. Hillary should know that there has never been a clearer mandate for impeachment than with this impostor. To be blinded by ambition doesn't speak very well for her. She is not my choice to run in 2008.

Strategy should not let this rascal get away with his crimes. The election and impeachment are two separate events. Linking them really makes my blood boil.

17. And again, how could the Dems actually standing up...
...for the Constitution and holding emperor pissy-pants accountable for his treasonous, unconstitutional, and corrupt actions work against getting a Dem elected for president in 08?

I think it's more likely that voters will be reminded that "all politicians are liars, all corrupt" and the DLC has the same general corporate funded policies as the neocons--and that the swing voters would rather vote for a white male than a woman or minority.

thrown at me while I'm trying to make my own case.

5. That's good news... John Conyers will not be complicit...
IF he... "feels it appropriate" (impeachment)

The fact is, it's been appropriate since day 1...

Ok, Dennis Kucinich is not complicit. Most representatives who signed his bill to impeach the dic-k first are not complicit.

Who else IS NOT complicit? John Conyers? Let's hope he will feel that soon...

6. I know why they won't impeach
because the republicans with they help of their media, would have a field day. After if they get rid of bush and cheney, Nancy Pelosi would be president. And they are afraid it would dash their chances of creating a land slide in 2008.

12. It is consistent if you take it to mean the difference between
his personal view and the position of the party leadership. Maddening but still, consistent.

19. meh.... more pandering from "Rock Star Johnny"
""While the discussion of health insurance for all and the great congressman from Michigan were well-received with cheers and applause, the cries for impeachment took center stage. In what has become routine now, Conyers fed into the momentum asking "What should we do?" "IMPEACH!" cried the crowd. "What should we do?" "IMPEACH!" and so it was repeated. The congressman went on to declare that we needed to bring back Rumsfeld and put him on trial and the big question was to decide who ought to go first. "Cheney!" shouted the crowd enthusiastically. Some knowing impeach activists in the crowd called the bluff asking "When are you going to act on this?" He replied that he was going to meet with impeachment activists. "When?!" they called. "Right after this march. Right here!" and he pointed back stage."

Yeah, keep on pandering and playing like it's some kind of game, John Boy.

22. I believe we needed to get Gonzales out of office
Say what you will about Janet Reno - she was fair & partial during the Clinton impeachment. Alberto Gonzales would have done everything in his power to prevent the impeachment.

Now we just have to hope that the Senate Judiciary keeps Bush Cronies out of office

23. STEP ONE: GET A FREAKING TABLE
Step Two: Located Impeachment documents or whatever you call them.

Step Three: SUPER Glue said paper to table.

Step Four: Nail, bolt or other wise secure table to floor.

Step Five: round up all congress critters, handcuff them to table.

Step Six: tell them you will release them when they have enough votes to impeach/convict or when Bush is gone, whichever comes first.
