You have to feel something for Suzanne Craig
Some politicians ask far too much of their spouses.

Idaho Sen. Larry Craig addresses the media on Tuesday afternoon in downtown Boise with his wife, Suzanne, about his arrest and guilty plea for disorderly conduct in a Minnesota airport earlier this summer during a sting operation targeting alleged sexual activity in a men's restroom.

2. I said this on another thread. Can you imagine the life that they must lead?
If she is straight and he is gay, neither one is living a very healthy emotional life. Two people locked into a desperately constructed, but socially acceptable, "marriage." That is one helluva way to live one's life!

10. Bisexual
I think the reason he kept saying yesterday that he is 'not gay' is because he is bisexual and therefore technically not 'gay'. There is a difference between bisexual and gay.

3. I don't know enough about her and her own choices to feel sorry for her.
In the abstract I can certainly imagine scenarios in which she is VERY deserving of sympathy.

It is, however, also possible she made her own deal with the devil.

4. I don't feel too bad for her. She's either downright stupid, in denial, or
has long ago made an "arrangement" with ol' Senator Widestance. Public embarrassment is tough, but then, that's life--I'm sure she enjoyed many perks as a Senator's wife.

I have to agree with everything you wrote. She can't control what he does, just the fact that she stays there while he does them. That was and is her choice.

5. She is his enabler
I don't feel at all sorry for her. His behavior has been known for years; this is only one instance of many. It has been no secret. She made a deal with the devil for $$$, a home, prestige of being a Senator' wife? Who knows or cares. But she has provided the 'cover' he has needed all these yrs to give himself some deniability.

BYW, in answer to another question about 'his' children- I read yesterday they are her children, not his.

that they are not related by blood to Craig. Maybe they can have the adoption reversed and take their real father's name.

That's not very decent or caring of you. I think we owe a moral obligation to try to feel compassion for everyone in this world, even those we may not always agree with.

26. I think compassion is less important than legal equality, frankly.
A lot of evil shit happens because of "compassion".

I care a fuck lot more about my rights than about anyone feeling compassion, which is a wonderful but more personal thing IMO.

28. rights
But compassion (or maybe empathy) is what allows us to look outside ourselves and worry about the rights of others, which is a larger goal than the selfish ensuring of one's own rights.

38. OK, Mr. Spock
I would argue that what you call "fair" is actually a reflection of a deeper compassion for others. You recognize and empathize with their inate humanity, which is a form of compassion.

for everyone else. When we ensure it for everyone else, we ensuer it for ourselves.

22. Typical "stand by your man" type after he has spent his enitre
wages at the bar and slaps her around a bit when she asks him about it. (I personally saw a lot of that type of behavior when I lived in Idaho. Some men forbade their wives to be friends with me because they claimed I gave them ideas cause I was one of them feminist types. For Idahoans who might be offended, this was way out in the woods, not the city.)

I just spent a week with a friend of almost fifty years who had a bad first marriage with an alcoholic and probably gay man. He also used to slap her around when she objected to his staying out late with the guys. She got rid of him when he abandoned her with two kids. We finally put two and two together that he was probably a closet gay. She even says his mother hinted to her that he wasn't a man before they got married and there was a lot of strange behavior of the cruising bathrooms type while he was married to her. Since she was a farm girl, she didn't know about gays until much later in her life. She also said that he refused sex with her after their second child was born.

Of course fifty years of hindsight doesn't change the tragedy for her, for him and the two children who were profoundly affected by their parents strange marriage and later abandonment by their father. He died a broken man in a Salvation Army shelter.

24. i don't really, she stood by him while he was railing on and on about how bad
gay marriage is and voted against hates crimes legislation that included gay people so i guess i kind of feel disgust for her because she's married to a someone who wants to amend the Constitution to actually exclude rights from americans.

There are men that enjoy sex with women and men as there are women who enjoy sex with men and women.

I wouldn't be surprised if she has been a "beard" through their entire marriage and it has never been consummated...

Craig and the then-Suzanne Scott had their first date on Valentine's Day 1980, when Craig was making his first run for Congress. Craig proposed six months after the scandal, on Suzanne's birthday, Dec. 28, 1982. They married in July 1983.

So presumably she was aware before the marriage of both the issue of his sexuality, and his steadfast position that he was not gay and never had been gay, as he reportedly told the FBI.
