Report on Conyers' appearance at Take a Stand Town Hall in Pontiac, MI on 8/28
Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 10:04 AM by SharonRB
Here's a link to a clip of the first six minutes of Conyers' speech, where he says "impeachment isn't off my table." My summary follows -- please forgive the lack of detail, but it was hard to take notes:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7045631199028588216

First of all, this was a well-attended event -- we had over 600 people in the auditorium at Pontiac Central High School. The Raging Grannies and a rap group sang, there was a panel discussion, DU's own lwfern spoke, and there were several other speakers, including Nancy Skinner, who gave a rousing speech against the war. The big Joe NOllenberg head showed up, too.

Before the event began, I had a chance to talk the Chairman Conyers. I asked him if we're going to be hearing "inherent contempt" when Congress is back in session. He basically said there's a good chance it could happen, and he referred to it later in his speech.

Conyers, of course, was the highlight of the evening. He opened up by saying, in response to all of the "IMPEACH" signs around the auditorium, that he has no reluctance to impeachment in general when it is appropriate.

He respects and loves Cindy Sheehan and he respects all of the people there in that room.

He defended Nancy Pelosi's statement that impeachment is off her table, but then he stated that it is not off of his table and that she can't prevent him from bringing articles of impeachment if he decides it's the right thing to do.

He spoke about all of the Republicans leaving a sinking ship and rattled off a partial list: Scooter Libby, Monica Goodling, Karl Rove, Don Rumsfeld, Scott Jennings, and a number of others and, finally, Alberto Gonzales (cheers all around).

Nothing has changed with Gonzo's resignation. Investigations will continue and they will get at the truth about everything, including the national security letter, enemy combatants, etc. We WILL PROTECT VOTING RIGHTS!

He then discussed inherent contempt and, for those who didn't know what it was, proceeded to explain the process. Sergeant at arms goes and arrests the person, brings them to Congress, where they are tried. If convicted, they take them to jail in the Capitol. The House jail has been closed for years, but the Senate still has theirs and he's sure they'll let them use it.

Conyers then talked about HR 676, his health care bill. Under this bill, everybody is in, nobody is out.

He mentioned Flint, MI and then gave kudos to Michael Moore for "Sicko." He also salutes Al Gore for his work on the environment and global warming.

We must end the imperial government.

Suggested everyone read "Bush on the Couch." He spoke a little about the book and then said "I'll just leave it at that because I'm not in the Witness Protection Program."

The government is out of touch. We need to mobilize. We must use diplomacy to work toward peace, including talking to Iran, Korea and China.

He ended by thanking the various speakers, including "the fabulous Nancy Skinner" and mentioned that Gary Peterson was in the audience.

2. Hi, hissy!
I still have to post over at DK, but I have to go into a meeting. I'll try to do it after that. I hope this is okay for DK. It's pretty choppy, but it will give people an idea of what he had to say.

4. I thoroughly enjoyed your description of the Take a Stand Rally in
Pontiac. I was impressed that many Michigan politicians were there. Last night I attended the Take a Stand rally and candlelight vigil in Augusta, Maine set in Capital Park, right in front of the Maine Vietnam Memorial. I found it very disappointing that not one Maine politician was there. I would have thought that Tom Allen, who is the Dem running against Susan Collins, would have been there. The speaker spoke about the Nazis in Germany during WWII, actually he just read it and there was a National Guardsman who will re re-deployed to Iraq spoke. The organizers did a fine job, but, where were Maine's leaders?

I attended the protest in Kennebunkport last Saturday and that certainly was exciting. Dennis Kucinich and Cindy Sheehan were awesome!!!

5. Glad you enjoyed it spartan61!
Conyers will go anywhere, anytime he's invited. He's giving the sermon at a local Unitarian church this coming Sunday. I may try to attend that, too.

7. yes
when you try to pin him down and get specific about the current situation, Conyers (whom I admire) obfuscates and quibbles. I resent his giving hope to this crowd last night, yet make no plans to prosecute the criminals who have this country by the throat. I suppose he is hoping that with the next election they will just go away, and in the meantime not do too much damage.

I find this perspective naive. He ought to know better by now nopt to trust anything these people say or do.

8. Believe me, he doesn't trust them about anything for a second
Even if he doesn't start impeachment proceedings, he will continue to investigate and investigate until he gets to the bottom of everything. He will not let up. Believe me, he is relentless.

9. Investigations without follow-up actions are worthless

10. Since the investigations haven't been completed yet,
we don't know whether or not there will be follow-up actions, do we? I say let things finish their full course and see where they lead. These things take time. We have to be patient. I know it's difficult in this age of instant gratification, but I trust Conyers to do what's right. Call me naive, but I do.

As for impeachment, I'm all for it if they decide to do it, but I totally will understand why if they don't. If we had three years left of the * regime, I'd feel like we absolutely had to do it. However, there are 15-16 months left (hallelujah!) and impeachment would distract everyone from the real work that needs to be done. I'd hate to see them throw everything else by the wayside for it, as important as it would be. We need to be careful what we wish for -- it could backfire right in our faces.

12. All hell can (and probably will) break loose in the 15-16 months that are left

This is a time for action, not dog and pony shows attempting to show something is being done when in actuality nothing is being accomplished.

14. Yes, it probably will.
I'll respectfully agree to disagree with you on this. There actually is a lot being accomplished. The final outcome just will take time. Imagine if we hadn't taken over Congress this year. None of these investigations would be taking place and most of the people who have left the administration would still be there and it would be business as usual.

24. You missed a great event.
Nancy gave a really spirited speech -- she's been against the war since before it started -- and, of course, Conyers was wonderful as usual.
