He was an amazing actor and, by his friends' accounts, a supreme human being.

John Cazale made his name on the New York stage, where he was an award-winning actor in the late 60's. He was also good friends with Al Pacino, with whom he made the leap to films. Cazale is unique among film actors in that every film he appeared was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards:

It was on this last film, The Deer Hunter, that Cazale was suffering with bone cancer. The studio didn't want him in the film due to insurance, but Meryl Streep (his fiancee at the time) and the director went to bat for him and got him in the film. When you watch that film, you're watching the last months of a terminally ill man wracked with severe pain, but delivering a superb performance.

He died much too soon and we missed some great performances he had ahead of him. Sorry if I come off a little strident, but, as you can tell, I'm a big fan of his.
