Richard Jewell dead at 44
Jewell, Falsely Tied to '96 Blast, Dies

Richard Jewell, the former security guard who was wrongly linked to the 1996 Olympic bombing and then waged a decade-long battle with news organizations to defend his reputation, died Wednesday. He was 44.

Jewell was found dead in his west Georgia home. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

"There's no suspicion whatsoever of any type of foul play. He had been at home sick since the end of February with kidney problems"

I remember watching that poor soul trying to escape from the press after becoming the "focus" of the bombing. RIP

2. And we trust Bush not to do the same.
That was just a horrible thing when it was found out he was wrongly accused. This man was much too young to die. :(

3. Seems most have forgotten that he really was a hero
His actions did save lives, and I wouldn't be surprised if his treatment afterwards hastened his death.

4. Oh! I hope! he wasn't alone through the *whole* thing.
So sad . . .

NO ONE should have to go like that!

No health care?

Gods bless him.

14. You know, people who have health insurance can die too.

I fail to understand what gives people the idea he didn't have health care.

5. So damned sad...
the article also indicates his partner was killed in the line of duty (law enforcement). Damn, can't the good guys catch a break? RIP, Mr. Jewell. I'm so sorry for the injustices in life that surrounded you.

6. I hope he's at peace
Yeah, I wonder if what happened to him didn't shorten his life, too. I can't even imagine what his days must have been like.

7. I hope that Lin Wood still pursues the suit against
the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and wins on the behalf of the Jewell estate, and the Mr. Wood has the decency to do it pro-bono, so that if he wins, Jewell's mother will get the money he would have taken in fees. As it stands, nearly 3/4 of the money he has settled other suits for has gone to attorney's fees and taxes.

R.I.P. Richard. You were a hero who saved several lives only to have your name dragged through the mud.

11. Richard Jewell is the reason I never listen to N. Boortz & never buy the Atlanta Journal Const.
Boortz was hideous in his evil-minded denunciations and denigrating of Jewell (re his weight). As for the AJC, I can still see in my mind's eye the evil-minded articles they wrote and the pain and sorrow in Jewell's eyes in their pictures of him.

The FBI was abominable--I think they fomented the attacks on him in order to try to get him to confess.

I yearn for the day that everyone shuts off the hate radio "personalities, and the O'Reilly's, the Carlson's, the Tweetys, and the Scarboroughs. In the blissful ensuing silence maybe we can regain our vision, our hearing, and our brains---and figure out that the heroes are among us---not among them.

13. How horrible
What was done to Richard Jewell is simply unforgivable. I hope that even after his death justice prevails.

And I really do hope that he found some peace after that ordeal. RIP to a true hero. :(
