One good thing to come out of the Craig hypocrisy exposure.
Edited on Thu Aug-30-07 01:25 AM by ConsAreLiars
Apart from the obvious, that is. The obvious is that a hatemongering bigot who has made his career out of playing the part of a holier than thou puritan got exposed as a deceiver, and his life of service to his corporate backers has been ended.

But less obvious is that, at least among people who are not gay-bashers by trade or by habit, is the instructional value of the discussions that have been taking place on places like DU regarding Craig. Some have yielded to the right-wing spin that Craig should be tossed from the Senate because he "did a bad thing." Well, violating a pledge to monogamy is certainly "a bad thing," but seeking sex (of any variety) in a designated location, whether a bar, a specific public area like a particular park, or maybe a specific location like near the Iwo Jima Statue on the Mall, or an airport restroom, was not "the bad thing." In the discussions I have read, some have been confused into thinking that the sex-seeking, or that specific variant, was "the bad thing." Fortunately, most on DU know better and have been patient in pointing out the facts.

The problem is not that some old guy sought a sex hook-up in a public toilet. Of course, in an ideal world there would be better alternatives readily available. The problem is simply that Craig is an evil self-serving Corporate con who was willing and able to demonize others and posture as being the purist of the the pure among the vicious gang of self-righteous homophobes, and he got exposed as a snake.

3. I must say, none of the Cons look anywhere near well-adjusted.
Everyone has problems, of course, and no one is perfect. But holy crap, they are the most creepy bunch of posers I've ever seen (as seen on TV). I suspect that there is a huge stinking pile of "there" there.

4. If you haven't already done so ..
Y'all might want to read up on Right Wing Authoritarians..

They are people who think so differently from most liberal/progressive folks that they might as well be another species..

There has actually been considerable scientific research done on these sorts of people and the results are quite fascinating.

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

OK, what’s this book about? It’s about what’s happened to the American government lately. It’s about the disastrous decisions that government has made. It’s about the corruption that rotted the Congress. It’s about how traditional conservatism has nearly been destroyed by authoritarianism. It’s about how the “Religious Right” teamed up with amoral authoritarian leaders to push its un-democratic agenda onto the country. It’s about the United States standing at the crossroads as the next federal election approaches.

“Well,” you might be thinking, “I don’t believe any of this is true.” Or maybe you’re thinking, “What else is new? I’ve believed this for years.” Why should a conservative, moderate, or liberal bother with this book? Why should any Republican, Independent, or Democrat click the “Introduction” link on this page?

Because if you do, you’ll begin an easy-ride journey through some relevant scientific studies I have done on authoritarian personalities--one that will take you a heck of a lot less time than the decades it took me. Those studies have a direct bearing on all the topics mentioned above. So if you think the first paragraph is a lot of hokum, or full of half-truths, I invite you to look at the research.

For example, take the following statement: “Once our government leaders and the authorities condemn the dangerous elements in our society, it will be the duty of every patriotic citizen to help stomp out the rot that is poisoning our country from within.” Sounds like something Hitler would say, right? Want to guess how many politicians, how many lawmakers in the United States agreed with it? Want to guess what they had in common?

Or how about a government program that persecutes political parties, or minorities, or journalists the authorities do not like, by putting them in jail, even torturing and killing them. Nobody would approve of that, right? Guess again.

6. Thanks for that link.
It will be a while before I read the whole thing, but so far it is readable, accurate, and instructive. I studied that stuff a while back, and so far he is dead on.

7. Sex in a public toilet IS the problem
I don't know what in the world people are thinking if they don't see that as a problem. I suppose we should just step over people if they decide to screw in the street too.

9. The Beatles
Paul and Ringo, more precisely. And a delightful tune. Referring to either Orwell's 1984 or watching a couple monkeys in India. (See http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=161 ) A good question, in any case. Of course, Big Brother says No.
