Week of Mobilization Against the New U.S. Military Base at Dal Molin
Activist Campout with Debates, Actions, Initiatives, Rallies, Concerts

September 8-16, Vicenza, Italy

The people of Vicenza have been struggling against a new U.S. military base in their city, already home to the base at Camp Ederle as well as several other U.S. military installations, for more than a year now. (see our Vicenza Dossier for more info: http://www.peaceandjustice.it/vicenza/) The U.S. Congress has authorized the funds and the Italian government, though too embarrassed to make the announcement themselves, gave its official approval in June. But this has done little to discourage the local residents, who are as determined as ever to block construction of the new base.

If fact, the local movement in Vicenza, following two successful national demonstrations, is organizing a “National Week of Mobilization,” an entire week of camping, actions, debates, rallies, concerts and initiatives, from Sept 8-16. They are calling on people from all over Italy, Europe and father a field, to participate and to stand firm with the residents of Vicenza in their refusal to play a supporting role in the U.S. wars of aggression.

This is a critical moment, with construction slated to start in the coming months. The issue of the base at Dal Molin in Vicenza has been the focus of the entire Italian movement for close to a year. The local movement has built ties with similar campaigns throughout Italy, Europe and the world. And with this week of mobilization, the local organizers intend to send the message to both the Italian and U.S. governments, that when Vicenza calls, the people will come.

So, at least for this trip, skip the hilltowns of Tuscany, the ruins of ancient Rome and the seaside along the Amalfi Coast and instead visit this UNESCO World Heritage city while adding you voice to the chorus of those shouting: No More Bases, No More War!

Logistics:
A camping area will be set up near the site of the new base, including showers, meals, tents for debates and a central stage. Several off-site actions will also be planned during the week, concentrated in the final three days (Sept 13-15). If you plan to camp, pre-registration is required.
