Plane Carrying U.S. Lawmakers Comes Under Fire In Iraq
By: Logan Murphy @ 6:25 PM - PDT

Via The Guardian:

A military cargo plane carrying three senators and a House member was forced to take evasive maneuvers and dispatch flares to avoid ground fire after taking off from Baghdad on Thursday night.

The lawmakers said their plane, a C-130, was under fire from three rocket-propelled grenades over the course of several minutes as they left for Amman, Jordan.

“It was a scary moment,” said Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., who said he had just taken off his body armor when he saw a bright flash outside the window. “Our pilots were terrific. … They banked in one direction and then banked the other direction, and they set off the flares.”

Sens. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and James Inhofe, R-Okla., as well as Rep. Bud Cramer, D-Ala., were also on the plane.

“We were jostled around pretty good,” said Cramer, who estimated the plane had ascended to about 6,000 feet. “There were a few minutes there where I wondered: ‘Have we been hit? Are we OK?’” Read more…

5. Just a couple of observations about this bullshit story
Firstly, rocket propelled grenades wouldn't be bothered at all by flares. Flares are used to confuse heat seeking missiles and metal chaff is used to confuse radar guided weapons. Rocket propelled grenades and bullets are not gonna be fooled by flares and chaff.

It is my guess that the pilots decided to scare the snot out of the morons partly responsible for their long deployments. They probably sat up front laughing as they jerked the plane all around.

10. Not a chance...
Even if Air Force pilots were prone to playing fast and loose that way, which they aren't, they could have scared the hell out of them with the maneuvers only. They would not have wasted a flare array that they might have needed to save their skins 10 minutes later.

18. In the heat of the moment, you probably couldn't tell if the projectile is guided or dumbfire
It would be safe to err on the side of safety by releasing countermeasures at any incoming, hostile object.

21. Flares are used to confuse the shooters
RPG launchers are handheld. The shooters are going to aim at anything visible.

of "Gosh it was a Thrill" to see how Al Qaeda is so "on the run" they just had to take a parting shot at a plane with Senators on board.

They will find a way... Ugh...

14. Imagine the orgy of warlust if they had been casualties. They would be HEROES & the teeniest withdra
withdrawal would be erased for years. I seriously think all these useless junkets over there should be discontinued, and ESPECIALLY for wingnut, chickenhawks who would be martyrized. That said, I hope they shit their flight suits.

20. I don't think so--this was a plane with U.S. SENATORS on it, not tourists
If they can't fly unprotected, who CAN they protect? If anything, this incident proves that the surge CAN'T work!

I've been there so many times it would make you puke. Indeed, 250+ right down the cat's throat in Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Laos. Especially Laos. Especially night. Especially Lam Son 719 (Google that shit!). Fuck you whining little sycophants.
