Why is there still a giant hole in the ground in NYC?
I realize that this is a bit random, and I know that I'm channeling Keith Olbermann's special comment from last year, but it just hit me that 9/11 was almost SIX years ago and there's still a gaping hole in the ground. I remember seeing an interview with Bill Clinton on Larry King inlate 2001. He suggested that we should do everything possible to rebuild as soon as possible, if for nothing else but to foster the healing process. The fact that we're going on six years and there isn't even anything rising above ground level is pretty sad. Anyway, just a rant.

1. I think that every time I see a picture of the hole
I think they don't want us to get past it...
Remind us of the Terra...

2. Because nobody cares
They're from "Texas" and "Texas" is the center of the Universe. Even if they aren't from "Texas".

3. Because we have the same criminal incompetent asshole as "president"
Same reason that two years later New Orleans is still a mess.

Same reason that six years later, we still don't have Osama bin Laden.

Same reason that five years later (less time than it took us to rise up from practically nothing and take down Germany and Japan), we're still losing Iraq.

Same reason that six years later, our economy continues to tank.

Same reason that six years later, our national energy level has plummeted to almost zero.

8. in my wildest dreams
although I was appalled when they stole the election and figured we were in for a contentious four years, I never, never could have imagined back in 2000 that it would ever be possible to write half of what you just wrote in this, the United States of America.

And Gerald Ford called Watergate our "long national nightmare."

18. Ding Ding Ding We have a Winner!
If we had a real leader, like FDR or JFK, There would hav e been a new building built as soon as humanly possible. Just as a giant "F**k you" to the terrorists. Of course, had we had a real leader, 9/11 would not have happened.

6. Whats so bad about a hole?
Are they still planning on building a 1,776 foot "freedom tower", national jingoism monument or whatever they are calling it?

For the real estate being so valuable I don't think that full occupancy is guaranteed for a long long time. People need to remember that was the case with the Empire State Building owing to the depression.

12. Maybe because it's private property
And neither the City, State or Federal governments are responsible for rebuilding it? I don't want my tax money going into it.

14. Insurance, financing, and design squabbles.
Oh, and jurisdiction: It's *not* private property (it's under long-term lease), so there was a quibble over who, exactly who should have final say over the design. At least that's the case for the twin towers' footprint. I think that WTC 7 was on private land.

17. We are all maggots crawling around in the corpse of a superpower.
Osama Bin Laden didn't kill this superpower, malignant forces within the Republican Party did. Even if the World Trade Center was still standing, everything the Republicans touched would still have turned to crap.

Hey, I've got an idea --

From now on any public toilet should be called a "George W." Not a john, not a crapper, not a restroom or a bathroom, not any of those things.

When you have to use the toilet, just say something like, "I have to piss, is there a George W around here?"
