Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 08:13 AM by Philosoraptor
Huh pal? How does it feel, to be loathed by a whole nation? How does it feel to be scorned and outed and humiliated on the media you've so skillfully manipulated for so many years?

How does it feel Larry baby, to be on your own, like a complete unknown, with no direction home? Like a trolling stone?

How does it feel to be suddenly seen as something of a social pariah? How does it feel to be singled out, called a pervert, how does it feel to be a closeted homosexual in America Larry, How?

Does it hurt Larry? I bet it really hurts to finally have a taste OF YOUR OWN FUCKING MEDICINE!

Fuck you Larry, see ya later moron.

8. Submitted for your opprobrium,
the man in political crisis is Senator Larry Craig: Republican, Conservative, and victim of a certain anti-gay hysteria which he helped to create, and which, by way of thanks, kindly ushered him out the door. But that is of no particular concern to him at the moment, because this is Friday, August 31, 2007, and, thanks to a police video, and a mouth with a flair for denying the obvious, Mr. Craig is on the cutting edge of oblivion. Senator Craig, who once said, he just wanted to be remembered as a singer*, is about to get his wish, in a small town called Yesterday, found on any map ... in The Twilight Zone.

* In 1995, Craig formed a barbershop quartet called The Singing Senators with Senators Trent Lott, John Ashcroft, and James Jeffords.

14. The Obsolete Man
Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 10:23 AM by formercia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Obsolete_Man

Opening Narration

"You walk into this room at your own risk, because it leads to the future, not a future that will be but one that might be. This is not a new world, it is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advancements, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: logic is an enemy and truth is a menace. This is Mr. Romney Wordsworth, in his last forty-eight hours on Earth. He's a citizen of the State but will soon have to be eliminated, because he's built out of flesh and because he has a mind. Mr. Romney Wordsworth, who will draw his last breaths—in the Twilight Zone."

Synopsis

In a future totalitarian society, set in 2106, Romney Wordsworth (Meredith) is a man put on trial for the crime of being obsolete. Publicly, he's a carpenter. Secretly, he is a librarian (punishable by death), and religious (also punishable by death). He is prosecuted by the chancellor (Weaver), who expresses in detail that he is not needed by society.

Eventually, Wordsworth is sentenced to die, and is given the choice of method of dying. He chooses an assassin and an undisclosed method of killing, additionally requesting that his death be broadcast live.

A camera is installed in Wordsworth's room to broadcast live to the nation, so they can see the condemned in his final hours. He summons the chancellor, who shows up at 11:15 PM. After some discussion, Wordsworth reveals that he has locked the door, and that his chosen method of death is by bomb, hidden in the room and set to go off at midnight. He intends to show the nation how a spiritual man faces death, and proceeds to read verses from his Bible, ownership of which is punishable by death, and thus is his only valuable possession. He also points out that, as the events are being broadcast live, the State will not interfere to rescue a high-ranking chancellor. As the time winds down, Wordsworth’s calm acceptance of death stands in sharp contrast with the chancellor’s increasing panic.

Moments before the bomb explodes, the chancellor finally begs the old man to let him go: “In the name of God, let me out!” Wordsworth immediately obliges, but not without repeating the mention of God—which the State had "proven", through an edict, to not exist.

The chancellor bursts out of the room and down the stairs just as the bomb explodes, killing Wordsworth.

In the final scene the chancellor, now stripped of his rank, is put on trial for none other than the crime of being obsolete.
Closing Narration

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete, but so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete. A case to be filed under "M" for mankind—in the Twilight Zone."

16. Instead of "Fuck You"
Instead of "Fuck you, Larry", wouldn't it be a bit better to offer Craig the same sort of treatment we might offer to other closeted gay guys?

As you say, it is really rough to be a closeted gay guy now.

Lots of people seem to think that what Craig did was "sick" and "perverted", and that he deserves what he got -- because "normal" people -- including "normal" gay people just wouldn't do that sort fo thing.

Villifying Craig for being a hypocrite is quite appropriate.

Villifying him for being a closeted gay man is not.

In fact, villifying him for being a closeted gay man will only cause other closeted gay men to become even more of social pariahs.

Does that mean that anyone who cruises public bathrooms is a dirty pisshole troll?

22. Oh, Please
"you trying to spin Mr. Craig away from the Administration and onto the backs of the Gay population?"

Oh, please.

I am certainly not trying to do that, and I'm sure you it.

The OP asked Craig: "how does it feel to be a closeted homosexual in America Larry, How?"

If you have some problem with someone "associating" Craig with gay people, you might want to take it up with the OP.

In fact, the point of my post was to say that there ARE, in fact, lots of closeted gay men who are now going to be driven even further into the closet because of what is being said about cruising for sex.

I think he's a hypocrite.

But I will not villify him because he went cruising for sex.

There are even wbepages that are for people who go cruising for sex.

Not everyone who cruises for sex is "opportunistic" (whatever the hell THAT means!)

And unless your are some ageist who thinks that sex should be reserved only for young people, then I really don't understand.

But, like I said -- whatever.

For fuck's sake.

I KNOW I am entitled to my opinion. I don't need you (or anyone else telling me that!)

And just what makes you think you are somehow "insulting" gay people by calling Craig gay, bisexual, or whatever???

I know lots and lots of gay people.

Lots of my gay friends are not "ordinary" -- They are extraordinary people leading extraordinary lives.

And I know that lots of them go cruising for sex.

Are you saying that gay people who cruise for sex should not be called gay because it insults other "ordinary" people.

Or are you suggesting that some gay people (those who go cruising for sex) should just repress their sexual urges?????

46. I won't try to judge what Larry Craig is....
...I can only conclude what I think he is from his actions. Yet repetition of the same behaviors are indicative. But, if he is a closeted (and married) gay man, he is but one of many closeted people in this country. But it was his actions, in his role as an elected official that likely led many to decide to go into the closet, and those who were already there, to stay there. "Where they think its safe."

In my view, rather than our vilification of him, it is his own actions that will more likely make closeted people to become more of a social pariah. It is their own unwillingness to live freely and openly, and expose themselves to everyone for who they really are, which is the first betrayal. And if you'll betray yourself, then what are you? Who will you NOT betray?

And how many of those closeted people do think voted for DOMA? Campaigned in Idaho for the state to pass a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage? As I said, repetition of the same behaviors are indicative.

He swore to uphold the Constitution, which insures the equality and fair treatment of all US citizens. And then he did the exact opposite. Hurt countless people and families doing it. And the hurt and inequality continues because of his efforts. No, he's not like all those other closeted people. He deserve everyone's vilification for his actions in helping to deny all people their right to equality. His actions hurt everyone. Because of who he is and what he has done.

Aren't all betrayers already pariahs? Just a thought....

20. Has any person in history ever been so humiliated...the internet, the news,
over & over & over, we're seeing and hearing this narrative. I'll be very surprised if Larry Craig doesn't end up committing suicide.

I can't help but feel sorry for the situation this man has found himself in. If the country was to learn anything about not being hypocritical, it may be worth it to watch this train wreck. But THAT'S really not the lesson the country is getting...the media just seems hell-bent on making fun of him for being a closeted gay man, or bi, whichever.

All of the humiliation piled on this man is for naught, in my book. Only a few of us, who really CARE about the hypocrisy, are seeing that picture. This man's whole life has been destroyed by this, and yet the majority of people are only laughing for all the wrong reasons... the man-on-man visual, and not for the hypocritical disconnect of the republican's "family values" crap.

It's a double tragedy for that reason.

36. Your post was crystal clear
You started out asking if "any person in history ever been so humiliated...the internet, the news..." If that's not a outright plea for sympathy for Sen. Craig, I don't know what is. Have you ever heard of Richard Jewell? You should...he died this week and that man lived through a hell 100 times what poor Sen. Craig is "enduring"

You're acting like anyone other than Sen. Widestance had any control over these events at all. "Worth the hoopla"...what the fuck are you talking about? This assclown cruised a public restrooom and got caught...there's no moral other than "don't cruise public restrooms looking for sex or you may get busted"

I'm confident that most Americans are seeing the hypocrisy and self-loathing in the GOP on display here. I'm not concerned.

40. Philosoraptor, while I totally agree with you and am feeling a sense of Schadenfreude and thinking
of the irony in the situation Senator Craig finds himself in, I had a dream last night that he couldn't take it and then actually took his own life "Idaho style with a shot gun". Seriously. I dreamt this and I thought about it a little while ago and I had mixed feelings about. I think about how many Gays have been forced to either live in the closet or if they are out, to deal with the way society will treat them, especially because of people like Sen. Craig who have made laws that hurt homosexuals.

But then I had this weird thought of another irony - how will someone like Craig deal with all this? He is obviously a self-loathing and closeted and angry person in denial of who he is and what if he did take his life because of all the publicity and him now being the butt of all jokes as a member of the "Grand old Potty"? I then thought if my dream actually came true, imagine how it would force people in this country, and especially all those conservatives that are so anti-gay and hateful, to take a good hard look at what their "hate" is doing.
