Bad week to read the news if you're a dog, part one

(LM: A few weeks ago, an article on NorthJersey.com reported that dog fighting is an increasing problem in the state. That is bad enough. But stealing three rescued dogs from an animal shelter…there is no word in the dictionary adequate to describe the person or people who stole those dogs. Despicable doesn’t come close. Nothing good is going to happen to those dogs.

Dante Alighieri made one error when writing The Divine Comedy. He left out a circle of hell, the circle of hell for people who mistreat dogs. Ironically, the Rottweiler mentioned in the NorthJersey.com article is named Dante.)

PATERSON — Authorities are offering a $3,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever stole three pit bulls from Paterson's animal shelter.

The dogs were rescued this month from a house that authorities allege was a training center for dogfights.

Chief Animal Control Officer John DeCando tells The Herald News of West Paterson the theft involved distracting a Rottweiler guard dog while the fence around each pit bull was cut.

DeCando says someone knew the animals because two of the dogs weren't friendly.

The dogs were evidence in a case against a man who was arrested earlier this month on animal cruelty and narcotic charges.
