2 tropical cyclones in North Atlantic?
Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 12:49 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
not possible to form into hurricanes but interesting none the less...

A SMALL AREA OF LOW PRESSURE LOCATED ABOUT 215 MILES SOUTH OF
NANTUCKET MASSACHUSETTS HAS NOT BECOME ANY BETTER ORGANIZED THIS
MORNING. HOWEVER...THERE IS STILL SOME POTENTIAL FOR THIS SYSTEM TO
BECOME A TROPICAL CYCLONE BEFORE IT REACHES COOLER WATERS. THIS
SYSTEM COULD ALSO STRENGTHEN AS A NON-TROPICAL LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS IT MOVES NEAR OR OVER THE
CANADIAN MARITIMES.

A NEARLY STATIONARY AND RATHER STRONG NON-TROPICAL LOW HAS DEVELOPED
ABOUT 700 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF CAPE RACE NEWFOUNDLAND. THIS
SYSTEM HAS BEGUN TO ACQUIRE SOME TROPICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND WILL
BE CLOSELY MONITORED FOR SIGNS OF ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS SYSTEM CAN BE FOUND IN HIGH SEAS
FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...UNDER AWIPS
HEADER NFDHSFAT1 AND WMO HEADER FZNT01 KWBC.

Added: Take a gander at area B1. There is quite a string of cyclones around the equator.

Edited again: Sorry about that; I keep forgetting that links to pictures get rendered as pictures

3. The name
All three are different names used in different areas for the same phenomenon.

4. location
The terms "hurricane" and "typhoon" are regionally specific names for a strong "tropical cyclone". A tropical cyclone is the generic term for a non-frontal synoptic scale low-pressure system over tropical or sub-tropical waters with organized convection (i.e. thunderstorm activity) and definite cyclonic surface wind circulation.

5. A "tropical cyclone" simply refers to the spiral wind pattern
and in this use indicates it is still below the category of a storm. From the nhc gloassary:

Cyclone: An atmospheric closed circulation rotating counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
