Student Debt
The Democratic Congress recently passed the largest increase in student aid since the GI bill -- but President Bush hasn't yet signed it into law. Sign our petition and tell George Bush to help make sure every American can get the education they deserve.

Sign the Petition
Dear President Bush,

Democrats are working hard to solve the problem -- reducing interest rates on student loans, capping monthly loan payments based on income, and forgiving loans for students who take public-sector jobs. These are common-sense proposals that give our children a real chance for a prosperous future.

The time has come to do something about our broken student loan system. I stand with the Democrats and demand an affordable college education for all Americans:

Sincerely,

2. I thought that once a bill passed the House and Senate

the pretzledent had 10 days to veto or sign. If he does neither the bill automatically becomes law in 10 days. So why sign a petition requesting he sign?

Oh yes, here it is:

A pocket veto is a legislative maneuver in American federal lawmaking, and is a process of indirect rejection. The U.S. Constitution requires the President to sign or veto any legislation placed on his or her desk within ten days (not including Sundays) while the United States Congress is in session. If the President does not sign the bill within the required time period, the bill becomes law by default (the President "keep the bill in his poket")
