Hey Western DUers!! Whatcha doing tomorrow morning?
Ya lucky bastids!! :P

West will witness rare meteor shower

Dust particles from a comet that passed through the solar system about 2,000 years ago are drifting toward Earth's atmosphere and will create a rare light show in the early Saturday-morning sky.

Comet Kiess sped through our solar system during the height of the Roman Empire around the time of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra: 36 B.C. to A.D. 45. As it passed the sun, particles of ice and debris melted and fell away from the comet. Now, the dust particles are slowly nearing Earth's gravitational field.

The Aurigid Shower is expected to peak around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The whole show will last about 90 minutes. The shower will be visible to the naked eye over most of the western United States.

The particles will slam into the atmosphere at 150,000 mph. Although most of the particles are smaller than a grain of sand, they will enter Earth's atmosphere at such high speeds, air molecules in their paths aren't able to disperse quickly enough. Those air molecules will then be condensed, creating a bright glow that shoots across the sky lasting about one-third of a second.

During the peak of the Aurigid Shower, about 200 meteors are expected every hour, or one to three every minute.

1. I am watching it drizzle. It usually does this when there is something neat going on.
I did get to see the eclipse which was very cool, but usually it drizzles for meteor showers. Bah

16. You must live up the street from me!
If the sky is having a happening, count on clouds and enough rain to ruin any chance of seeing anything, but not enough to settle the dust for 10 minutes.

3. Time for me to
move a mattress out onto the deck and set an alarm. I enjoyed the meteor shower a couple of weeks ago. Northeaster CA is a good place to see them since the air is clear and there is little light polution out here in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the heads up!

4. I will set my alarm clock!
I live at 6700 feet asl outside of L.A. The meteor shower on 8/12 was impressive indeed. Maybe tomorrow morning I'll try to get a pic or two!

13. Last weekend, the eclipse. This weekend, the shower.
I am holding a party on my parking deck 150 feet over SF Bay.

Come on over!

150 feet above SF Bay.

We had a great view of the eclipse and there are no overhead obstructions for the shower.

18. I'm so there
I saw one about 12 years ago, we were camping on the White Rim Trail (one of the most beautiful places on earth...I think I saw God...but I was stoned so maybe not) and I slept under the stars. It looked like one at a time they started speeding across the sky. I counted 300 in the course of a couple of hours. A memorable night. I'm not sure this will be the same thing but it might be a night to sleep out on the balcony. . .or at least set the alarm.

If I see God again, I'll let you know.
