Your persistence in speaking your mind for what is right is what this dying democracy so desperately needs. A well-written piece like that in the local paper, from someone in the community, just might touch a nerve where all the screaming and hollering and namecalling on the tube does nothing. That stuff is just like the fans at a ballgame trying to outshout each other - they'll never convince the other side of anything.

But maybe, just maybe, without all their pals around them hooting and hollering, one or two will read your letter and start to wonder if the "other side" might just have a point.

That, ultimately, is how we got this nation and its form of government. People writing their thoughts and circulating them amongst the populace. People like Tom Paine, James Madison, John Jay, and, of course, the author of those "quaint" amendments you described.

We all talk about the "sheeple" and how they just go along with whatever seems to be the "conventional wisdom" du jour. Well, let's turn that to our advantage. Call talk radio, write LTTE, put on bumper stickers - not the really fun kind like "F$%^ Bush" but things like "Restore freedom" or some such. Every time a freeper is prompted - even momentarily - to question whether his/her hero has feet of clay, whether his/her OWN freedom is threatened more by our government than by the terrists - well, maybe that's one sheep that will wander from the flock. And it can snowball, folks. If we could just get a toehold into his hardcore base, his remaining backers in the congress could turn on him as fast as they did Craig. And then we'd have.... THE VOTES!
