Can't we all just get along?
I mean really.

People are using this Craig scandal as a gay bashing tool, whether they notice it or not. It is really just under the surface.

But,

Just because that is happening doesn't mean anyone should defend Craig's actions.

Craig is a sick individual and does not represent the gay community.

And this is coming from a straight woman.

OK I will take my lumps now.

1. Sorry, as a straight white male, I'm not allowed an opinion.
Not that I'm bitter or anything.

No one...
...in the gay community has been defending him like we are being accused of doing (not by you but others.) We are trying to make people understand why this happens. It isn't that we agree with it.

And as for the gay bashing, it happens every time something like this happens. First it is just simply pointing out the hypocrisy of the situation (fantastic for doing that.) But then it always (and I really do mean ALWAYS) reverts into the disgusting jokes that you can only say are bigoted at best, homophobic at worst.

7. I agree

that there is bigotry and it is happening. I see it.

But any explanation will cause most people turn away. Public sex (gay or straight) is a real turn off for most people and it does not help one's real argument about the gay and lesbian fight and turns it into a pissing contest.

10. To put it in one perspective, this happens with a lot of issues.
But, and this is great -- wait for it -- in the time I've been here at DU, I notice that speaking up consistently does make a difference.

For example, the last time someone was executed under the death penalty, there were all kinds of horrible posts about "roasting" and so on. This time out, there were mainly threads in support.

Hang in, my dear. DU seems to me, anyway, to be a snapshot of the progressive community. We respond really good to edification.

5. I'm just sitting back, taking it all in.
I almost posted a comment, but then someone else posted it and offended someone else, so I'm staying out of it.

6. it's the 'down-low' community
Edited on Fri Aug-31-07 11:22 PM by shanti
that deserves anyone's ire because of this. and that is exactly what he has been doing. down-low behavior has destroyed many lives. the hypocrisy is the result, imo.

12. One of the questions was on this forum, "Can't we all just get along"..
Answer is: If everyone would just keep their sexual endeavors in the privacy of their own homes and don't push it on others then I believe that we can just get along. Growing up, I worked in a very popular resort hotel where not only the General Manager but most of his commanders were gay and 90% of the goings on were kept in private. However, there was that 10% that was not, and some of the employees that were gay thought that they should attempt to hit on those that were heterosexual... (don't know for certain that they knew who was gay or who was straight) but to me it should be kept in your own arena and not troll in another areana... If you get my drift? I seriously have no problem with my fellow citizens that are gay, just so long as you don't attempt to hit on me.... (Now that's not so much to ask IMHO)

13. Quit shoving the gay community into the closet
I have no clue what "arenas" you are talking about, unless you mean the world at large is for straight people, and gays need to "learn their place."

14. Why don't you tell that...

...to the countless STRAIGHT people I caught having sex on the roof top parking of a local shopping centre I used to work security at?

Not once did I ever come across gays indulging in some of the finer pleasures in life, but I did come across one man who thought it would be great to go into the female bathrooms and strip off, lay naked on the floor and wait for the womens reactions as they walked in. FYI, he was STRAIGHT.

And another FYI: they gay community isn't pushing their sexual encounters on anyone. The people who have the problem with gay people in the first place and the ones who are constantly talking about it. I swear straight people talk about gay sex more than I get laid.

On edit: typo
