Oaxaca Declines To Be Governed |
|
The Zapotecs in Oaxaca, along with the Maya in Chiapas, have never truly given up the fight against the colonialist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S0HNpvesOUhttp://www.narconews.com/Issue46/article2768.html

1. The Oaxacans sure love their teachers |
|
In the US, when the teachers go on strike, everybody says, "Those lazy NEA bastards are out to get us."
In Mexico, when the teachers strike, the parents join them, and are willing to take bullets for them.
One of the things I've seen teaching in a heavily hispanic school is that, on the negative side, once a child gets to high school the parents are often much less involved (easily understandable, since many of them are coming from a strata of society where an eight grade education is a luxury).
But on the positive side, when I do interact with parents, I am treated with respect instead of disdain, and while the system as a whole is viewed with fear and suspicion, on a personal level I am treated as an ally for their child instead of an obstacle. Give me a gang-banging, illegal, Mexican kid any day of the week over a white kid from the suburbs.
