War Crime Prosecutors Issue Call for Action

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. -- An unprecedented gathering this week of international war crimes prosecutors -- those seeking justice for recent atrocities and two who made history at the Nazi trials at Nuremberg 62 years ago -- issued a joint appeal to the world community to arrest war criminals still at large and turn them over to stand trial.

Meeting at this scenic Victorian-style enclave overlooking a small marina, the prosecutors sought to rekindle the legacy of Nuremberg and send a message to war crimes perpetrators everywhere that no one is above the law.

There was also strong criticism of the United States at the gathering for not fully backing the International Criminal Court (ICC) and for failing to follow the Geneva Conventions in detaining and interrogating terrorism suspects.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/31/AR2007083102027_2.html?hpid=topnews

<snip>King accused the United States, which pushed the World War II Allies to create the tribunal for Nazi war criminals, of now "fighting a rear-guard action against the advancement of the Nuremberg principles." He referred to a memo by outgoing Attorney General Alberto Gonzales labeling the Geneva Conventions "quaint," and he chastised the Bush administration for withholding support from the ICC.

Walking with difficulty and using a cane, he said he remains an idealist and unabashed about his passion: "I am the real deal," he said.

2. This is getting serious
First we hear NATO is complaining about the US using drones in Afghanistan, now we hear from experts and leaders in international war crimes criticism of the US for its "rendition" programs and Bush's refusal to support the ICC.

What kind of country have we become?

To rec a post like this.

I was listening to Rhandi Rhodes this week, and you know, no one else would point this out, but honest to God, you know we made through WWII,
the Cold War, Vietnam and Korea without pissing all over the constitution like the boy emperor has.

6. I have to ask this
What good are the war crimes prosecutors if they cannot prosecute? Our criminal in chief decided not to recognize international war crimes tribunals, which in itself was not a good sign. He will certainly be worried about being criticized and 'chastised'. Hopefully I have missed something and there is a way to deal with violent leaders who do not obey the laws of the land.

7. If there was any justice, they would all have to pay restitution, too.
On top of any other sentencing, they should have every penny taken away to pay restitution. It's the only way to stop this shit.

13. The world is screwed up they're not going to do anything.
Europe seems to have a habit of sitting back, afraid to confront madmen until millions of people have been slautered. Matter of fact a lot of European nations are complicit in Bush's terror on humanity. Also you have asian nations like China and Japan who's loaning Bush the money for his murderous adventures that makes them complicit. With all those major countries involved, a case against Bush would be too hot for the Hague /ICC to touch. I'm afraid if the american people don't hold him responsible then he will be forever a free man. So what you gonna do?
