4. Senseless 'Sacrifice' in Iraq Must End
by Keith Olbermann

If the BBC is right — and we can only pray it is not — he has settled on the only solution all the true experts agree cannot possibly work: more American personnel in Iraq, not as trainers for Iraqi troops, but as part of some flabby plan for “sacrifice.”

Sacrifice!

Sacrifice now, sacrifice tomorrow, sacrifice forever.

5. Deja Vu
Bush thanks troops in surprise visit to Iraq

Jun 14, 2006

US President George W Bush, who flew in to Baghdad for a surprise visit to meet with the new Iraqi leadership and US troops, has thanked his troops for their "sacrifice" in Iraq.

"I bring greetings from a grateful nation," Mr Bush told soldiers in Iraq.

"I thank you for your sacrifice. I thank you for your service. I thank you for making history."

A White House official says Mr Bush, who met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to show support for the new government, has now left Iraq and is on his way back to Washington.

The visit, Mr Bush's first to the country since November 2003, was marked by tight security and secrecy.

Even Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki knew the President was arriving only minutes before they actually met.

Mr Bush gave his unequivocal backing to the new prime minister, saying he was impressed by the composition of the Iraqi cabinet and its strategy.

Speaking to troops in Baghdad on their lengthy tours of duty in Iraq, Mr Bush said "I understand long deployments are tough. They're tough on you and they're tough on your families".

"And so the first thing I want to tell you is the American people are incredibly grateful for what you do, and I bring their greetings and their thanks for the sacrifices you and your family make."

Mr Bush also expressed confidence in General George Casey, the head of coalition forces in Iraq, and US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, for their work in Iraq.

"One of the things I try to do is put good people in place to accomplish hard jobs, and I can't think of two better leaders than Zal Khalilzad and General Casey to lead this important effort," he said.

10. LAT: Surge fails to bring needed reconciliation to Iraq
As the Bush administration prepares to present its version of "progress" associated with the president's troop surge that began seven months ago, independent assessments show the surge has failed to catalyze political developments necessary for the country's future.

12. Back From Baghdad
A conversation with Congressman Moran about his recent trip to Iraq.
By Michael Lee Pope
September 4, 2007

Arlington Connection: Is the surge working?

Jim Moran: The surge is effective from a military standpoint, but the end result is not consistent with America’s objectives. What we’ll be left with is a Shiite theocracy aligned with Iran that suppresses women and human rights. How is that worth the sacrifice of our military families and the half a trillion dollars we’ve poured into that country?

AC: When should the United States begin a withdraw of our troops?

JM: Yesterday.
