But I did DA in Tempe. No microfiche, just fish carp, which translates in Beijing to crap, thus steaming crap and bushitler is serving it in al Anbar Province today.

79. I walked ten miles a day. On Monday's we had community newspapers
I would have my satchel full. a satchel full on my right arm. Three or four bundles of first class in or attached on the outside of the satchel.
My neck gave out. My C4,5,6 have bad disks. I can't work anymore, I'm 100% disabled. It took three years to win my case, but I won without help from lawyers. I also got SS disability on my first try.

My route was a killer route I was the third straight carrier that went out on disability. It was a bitch to case too. It had over 600 customers, and a very high turnover.

72. Former member of two unions
Edited on Mon Sep-03-07 07:29 PM by Canuckistanian
UBC Local 27 (Toronto) and Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Local 975.

In the former, I was a laborer in construction working for my father, making money for my tuition.

In the latter, well, that was a different story. I started a union in my workplace.

Working at my first job in electronics, I got fed up with our owner. It was a small company, about 40 people, with all job descriptions from cleaning staff to engineers.

But the boss was a real piece of work. He practically WAS Montgomery Burns - old, balding, money-grubbing, insulting and arrogant. He was filthy rich from the company, yet he ran an ad hoc lending business, making loans for his employees. He also owned about 20 houses and liked selling them (with his own mortgaging deal) to employees. He loved that. He also tried to pay a receptionist to have an abortion when she became pregnant and tried to pick physical fights with people on the shop floor.

He was terrible as a boss as well. An engineer once demanded that this boss institute a profit-sharing program in a public letter, because we were all paid so little, but the company was raking it in. The engineer was let go. His customers hated dealing with him so much, they banded together and threatened to stop buying from him.

So, one day, I just walked into the nearby C.E.P. union office and said, "How do I organize?".

Well, they took me in hand. They gave me an education in Labor law, signing up members and negotiating.
I had about half the signatures I needed when "Mr. Burns" found out. He came up to me, grabbed me by the collar and threatened me. I didn't back down.

The next day, I was fired. The reason? "We don't need this kind of trouble here". I left quietly, knowing I had the union at my back. The next week, the boss had a summons to appear at a Labor Rights Tribunal.

Long story short, I won the case, got my job back and the case of the unfair dismissal helped us get our certification. We even had a vote (even though we didn't need one) and we won anyways with a majority.

I ended up leaving the company (I hated the job, I just did it for the others who worked there) and got another position that was far better.

Hauled Exploreres and Navigators from Wayne Assembly for a while. Worked an overnight shift, moving 6 units per load down to a rail "Mixing Center" in Fostoria - 2 loads per night. About 220 miles round trip. Woodhaven distributed loads as far away as Southern OH/Northern KY, Western MD and as far west as the Quad cities.

Also hauled out of a yard in Canton, from the River Rouge facility and Wixom Assembly.

77. Not me but my father.
Secretary of Local 4-367, Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers, Pasadena Texas, in 1940. Age 29. Youngest secretary of a Local in their history. Now the OCAW Is called PACE.

Member of Pipefitters Local 227, Houston, Texas.

He raised money for the widows and orphans left behind after the great dual ship explosion (ammonium nitrate) at Texas City, Texas in April 1947.

Union organizer for OCAW in the 1930s. He told me about picketing at Crown Central Petroleum and if you showed up and picketed at a lockout, you got your head busted open by the cops, you got hauled off to jail, and your bail was $100.

Nobody had any money so Arthur Mandell's wife bailed everyone out. Arthur Mandell was the first labor lawyer in Houston. He started Mandell & Wright. The name is different now but the successor firm is still around doing employment law.

"I always figured if someone called me a communist, I was doing something right." -- Dad.

Here's to you, Dad, gone to that great union hall in the sky with all the other hard working folks who built this country and made sure we had 40-hour weeks, overtime, safety protections, and minimum wages thanks to FDR.

And you voted for Norman Thomas in 1932 for President. Ashtabula County wondered who that dirty commie was on the voter rolls!
