END THE WAR: Sept. 15 - Mass March in Washington DC!
Coming soon, perhaps the largest Anti-War event to date.

===================================
Sept. 15 - Mass March in Washington DC!
http://www.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=S15_homepage

Join Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace, the ANSWER Coalition, Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, and thousands of others in Washington DC on September 15 for a huge antiwar protest timed to coincide with the report by General Petraeus on the "Surge" in Iraq.

Veterans for Peace E-Bulletin
A plea from Adam Kokesh:
"Protesting is not enough!"
Join VFP in Washington September 15

"Dear Veterans for Peace,

"As many of you are aware, the next big mobilization of anti-war protestors is going to be in Washington, DC on September 15th. However, you may not be aware of the significance of this particular demonstration. Tina Richards of Grassroots America and I have been working extensively with the ANSWER Coalition to make sure that this is not just another protest. We have made the theme, 'Protesting is not enough. Come for the rally, stay for a week of direct action.'

"To kick off the week of action, after the rally we will march from the White House to the Capitol, and go straight into a mass civil-disobedience die-in around the Peace Monument. The die-in will be led by an Honor Guard of Iraq Veterans Against the War who will simulate a 21-Gun Salute before taps is played to initiate the die-in. We are asking as many members of VFP as possible to sign up to wear cammies and die-in around us to symbolize the American cost of this war. We will be encircled by bolts of red cloth to symbolize the Iraqi deaths and invite anyone else from the rally to participate in the die-in." 4. Two reactions to the latest "march to save the world"
First - taking the view of the many "impeachment is a waste of time" folks here, people should only go to DC for the march if there is a guarantee that Shrub and the other pols will pay attention and end the war immediately.

Second - anyone who thinks that marching on Washington (sounds romantic and powerful) will accomplish anything is living in the past. This ain't the 60s anymore, people. The political game is very different than it was back then. Other methods of influencing the politicians that rule us are necessary.

At least, I hope y'all have nice weather.

5. What have you been smokin? "march if there is a guarantee" COME ON!
Imagine the Sixties if the People had said, Don't march unless "there is a guarantee that ... pols will pay attention and end the war immediately" as you write. Same goes for segregation and civil rights! Imagine MLK saying, "Let's not march. There is no guarantee." COME ON!!

What an incredible position to take. I know a lot of Bushies want the protest to fail and are pulling all manner of diversions, but this is the worst reasoning on demonstations I've ever seen, except perhaps, "But, you could get shot at." People demonstrate BECAUSE the government is unmoving on an issue.

7. didn't think a sarcasm label was necessary... guess it was.
I was only repeating the rationalization that some use to discourage efforts toward impeachment (Dems do not have 67 votes in the Senate, etc.)

But I am serious about the futility of marches in the present day political environment. We have seen that even electing Dems will produce nothing in the way of resistance to the Bushistas (unless we meekly support any Dem in the hope of eventually having veto-proof numbers in both houses).

I will again state my belief that unless the politicians are held personally responsible and suffer personal consequences for their (in)actions, they will continue to do nothing. Anyone who has children will tell you that the only way to shape behavior is through real consequences. Threatening without following through accomplishes nothing. Even little children learn that early. And "our" representatives in government are at least as smart as a first grader.

11. While we arer largely in agreement, I say March. And I fail to
understand why we should take marches and protests "off the table." Yes, we must hold elected officials accountable. But, we must not silence ourselves for some nebulous reason, like "political environment."
