Finally, yesterday, he offered a variation of the line that made the threat sound a little more ominous, like something from an Alfred Hitchcock movie or, to update the simile, Director Rob Zombie's new "Halloween" movie.

"If we let our enemies back us out of Iraq, we will more likely face them in America. If we don't want to hear their footsteps back home, we have to keep them on their heels over here."

Hearing footsteps. That's scary. Maybe next the White House speechwriters will go for "We don't want want to see their shadows on the wall coming up our stairs, so we need to fight them there."

It connotes with more precision the sound of a footstep, at least in old mystery novels. Why not go full bore and say "We don't want to hear their footfalls back home, or feel our hackles rise as their icy breath presses closer to our necks and their unseen eyes watch our every move. What is the furtive rustling beneath my bed, that odd jangling in my closet?"
